At its annual meeting in December each year, the Bridge Club of Ithaca awards a number of trophies and other awards to club members. These pertain to players’ performance over the previous 12 calendar months (i.e., December of the previous year through November of the current year).
To be eligible for one of the first six awards, a player must have played more than 20 times and with at least five partners in the games on which the award is based. A player may not receive more than one of these six awards in a single year, although he or she may receive the Service Award in addition to one other award. A player may not receive the Jean Spitzer Trophy or the Most Improved Player Award more than once.
"Daytime games" are the ACBL-sanctioned games on Mondays and Thursdays. "All games" include the daytime games and the Tuesday evening game. Both face-to-face and online games are included, but games played with robot partners are excluded.
The awards and their criteria:
The Roselyn and Saul Teukolsky Player of the Year Award is awarded to the player with the highest average percentage* in all games.
The Daytime Trophy is awarded to the player with the highest average percentage in the daytime games.
The Jerry Krauss Trophy is awarded to the player with the highest average masterpoints earned in the Tuesday game.
The Jean Spitzer Trophy is awarded to the non-life-master with the highest average percentage* in all games. To be eligible, players must have had no more than 500 masterpoints at the beginning of the period.
The Most Improved Player Award is awarded to the player who has shown the most improvement, as determined by the increase (over the previous year) in the player’s average percentage in the daytime games. To be eligible, a player must have played in at least 20 games in both the current and previous year, and must have had no more than 200 masterpoints at the beginning of the current period.
The Versatility Award is awarded to the player with an average percentage of at least 50% in the daytime games, and who has played with the greatest number of different partners. Players who regularly rely on game organizers to arrange partners may be excluded from consideration.
The Jeannette and Robert Hine Service Award is awarded to a player whose service has made an outstanding contribution to the operation of the club. The recipient is determined by the President in consultation with the Club Manager. (This award need not be made every year.)
After the annual meeting, lists of the top-ranking players together with their scores for the first six awards will be posted at the club and on the web site.
* The average percentage is the weighted average of the daytime and Tuesday evening average percentages, the latter being a linear estimate based on average masterpoints earned due to IMP scoring.
