Far-Infrared Spectroscopy

Prof. Micheal Tinkham - a founder of FIR spectroscopy, the author of "Introduction to Superconductivity".

Optical spectra including FIR region contain a variety of important information on optical absorption (electronic & phononic). Electronic absorptions are transitions of electrons from occupied states (or bands) below the Fermi level to unoccupied states above it. The electronic absorption is a two-particle (electron and hole) process, which consists of intraband and interband transitions. The phononic absorption spectra carry the lattice structure.
