On this page we bring the stories that make up the student and faculty of our school. By sharing these stories we hope to highlight the plight of the poverty stricken people in our country in order to raise awareness and inspire us all to help those less fortunate.
7 May 2010:
Maryam a five-year-old kindergarten student caught our attention with her alarmingly poor health and rapid weight loss. The school authorities decided to launch an investigation, what we found was a disturbing story of abandonment and loss. Maryam lost her father in the earthquake that struck north and northeast Pakistan in October 2005. Her mother later married a man who had children of his own from a previous marriage. However, rather than Maryam’s life improving with the addition of a new father figure in her life, things got progressively worse for her. Her mother turned her attention towards her stepchildren leaving Maryam at the tender age of five years to fend for herself. With what little food that came into the house, Maryam had to contend with the leftovers. As a result her weight decreased and now Maryam is a bony little girl in desperate need of proper nourishment. Her only good luck was that she is a student of Iqbal Foundation school where there are teachers and administrative staff dedicated to improving the lives of students just like Maryam.
Afterword: Maryam has been put on a nourishing diet by the school staff and we are hopeful that she will soon recover her health and be a healthy, happy little girl with the promise of a good education ahead of her.
