About Earth Day
Mother Earth is a common expression for the planet Earth in number of countries and regions, which reflects the interdependency that exists among human beings, other living species and the planet. For instance, Indians call Mother Earth Bhoomatha. Recognizing this, we all inhabit, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared 22nd April as International Mother Earth Day. Earth Day is an annual event, on which events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network. This is the largest, most widely celebrated International event as it provides a chance to remember what an amazing planet we live on. It is the only planet in our solar system teeming with incredible biodiversity. People all over the world are celebrating and make best efforts to protect planet and its environment.
Celebration of Earth Day 2014 will focus on green cities, mobilizing a millions of people to create a sustainable, healthy environment by greening communities worldwide. Today, more than half of the world’s population lives in cities. As the urban population grows and the effects of climate change worsen, our cities have to evolve. It’s time for us to invest in efficiency and renewable energy, rebuild our cities and towns, and begin to solve the climate crisis. Over the coming years, the Green cities campaign will mobilize a global movement to accelerate this transition. Join us in calling for a new era of green cities.
The Planet Earth is at a turning point. The massive global migration underway now from countryside to cities will demand huge investments in energy, water, materials, waste, food distribution, and transportation over the next few decades. If the right investments are made now, this unique opportunity will be the promoter for dramatic changes in the built environment and the fight against green house gas emissions and to the extent of climate change.
