The Illawarra region is located on the South Coast of NSW where the escarpment meets the sea. Wollongong is the major city for the area with natural beauty, vibrant culture, seriously good sports, exciting events and must-see attractions.

Our group has had several locations over the years in which we have met and sewed.

Our current location is Keiraview Uniting Church, Fisher Street, West Wollongong.

Illawarra Quilters Inc (IQI) originally formed in 1987 with our first Exhibition held in 1988 showcasing members' work and raising funds to support local community institutions.

Since then, we have had many exhibitions and more recently two-day Expos to highlight our member’s works, whilst being supported generously by many businesses, from near and far.

IQI has a Community Assistance Program. Our members make and donate quilts, beanies, scarves, bead bags and much more to the local community including many of the charities, local  hospitals, NSW Ambulance, the local fire brigades in and around the lIlawarra and even with the various Children’s Hospitals in Sydney.  Donations or sponsorship for materials, especially wadding, is most welcome. IQI run Workshops through the year, promoting new techniques and breaking new boundaries. We use our own members but also get in local and international tutors.  Workshops that we have run are:

•      Alternative disappearing Ninepatch,

•      How to make a bag – various shapes, sizes and techniques

•      Paper piecing making Christmas decorations

In 2019 the members of Shinobu Patchwork Association in Fukushima Japan made contact with the ladies of Illawarra Quilters Inc. The connection is being fostered through a shared love of fabrics and beautifully crafted items.
