Part One-Analyzing a Speech
Watch the YouTube video clip below and take notes as to what makes this boy’s speech effective (tone, posture, voice inflection, etc.). (Yes, the video is cheesy, but consider how young he is and the size of his audience. Could you do it?) Be ready to share out your findings.
Overview: The following assignment is going to require you to examine a political issue through the lens of the two candidates running for President (Obama & Romney). Below is a detailed description of the process and what is expected of you. Be sure to ask any questions that you may have.
Part Two-Topic Assignment and Research
You and your partner will randomly be assigned a candidate and a topic. It will be your responsibility to research your candidate’s stance on the topic. Please note the following: 1) Your typed speech will be collected for a grade. 2) You may not get the candidate and topic you want. What is most important is that you thoroughly understand your candidate’s stance on the issue and that you can communicate this to an audience.
Week of September 24th: Choose a partner (must be someone who shares your English class 3rd period). Presidential issues will we be outlined through your Government class. Click here for a list of the issues.
October 1st: You and your partner will be assigned a candidate and an issue.
October 2nd and 4th: Work in the computer lab 3rd and 4th period if you are in Mr. PIraino’s 3rd period class.Work off netbooks in Room 211 3rd and 4th period if you are in Mr. Flanders 3rd period class.Work off netbooks in Room 206 3rd and 4th period if you are in Mrs. Szewczyk’s 3rd period class.
Part Three-Speech
Using your research, you are to write a speech as if you were the assigned candidate on your topic. This speech should be 1 to 2 minutes in length. As well as writing the speech, you are going to be required to present it. Presentation of the speech will be graded. The speeches will be taped the week of October 15th through the media program.
Notes
Your English teacher will develop a rubric to grade all aspects of the project. Themes will include: Meaning / Organization / Development (of idea) / Language / Content (a fluent understanding of your topic).
Mr. Piraino will discuss the basics of the project as well as potential issues.
