L01 is MY lecture to all four sections combined. Course will start with YOUR lecture, which I will call L02. Your first lecture will go over the same material as my own lecture which they are supposed to have watched already. ALSO, they SHOULD have solved the quiz on this lecture, which would be available to them. The SECOND IN-CLASS quiz could be different. HOWEVER, my suggestion is that you take the first IN-CLASS quiz to be EXACTLY the same as the take home quiz.
ALSO, inform them to use the Intro Stats Blog to ask questions if they have problems with answering the questions. They can discuss among themselves and also get responses from the teachers, and maybe even myself.
By using the exact same quiz, you should get a better idea as to how many students have viewed the lecture and done work. ENCOURAGE them to come prepared to the next class. Tell them that the quiz scores WILL count towards class grade.
Start Class EXACTLY on time. Announce that you value time of your students.
Explain that students are expected to work between classes, especially watch lectures on youtube -- this can be done on a smartphone, even.
Students SHOULD have come prepared with having watched the first lecture and done the first quiz on the lecture on their own.[see links below]
Ask students to take out a piece of paper and pen, WRITE their names & Roll Number
Project In-Class QUIZ -- EITHER exactly the same as the one assigned OR develop a slight modification and attach below for reference later -- and ask them to write answers
This should finish within the first ten minutes. Have them submit quiz for grades
Project Lecture Slides and Discuss Issues -- ask for pro and con arguments. Dont necessarily try to SETTLE issues, you can say that we can ask Dr. Zaman what he thinks about this, for example, and leave arguments open.
LAST Ten Minutes of Class: Makeup a Group Activity for class on basis of discussion. Take most interesting question which arose during class. Have small groups discuss issues and debate among themselves. PROVIDE ONE argument (best) from BOTH sides of the issue. Have group write up and submit written arugment -- ONE page, from whole group.
FEEDBACK. Ask each student to write ONE POINT -- what was the single most interesting/important thing that he/she learned in this class? SUBMIT.
ASSIGN TASK to do BEFORE next class: They should WATCH Video Lecture L02 Statistics as Rhetoric AND. Do Take-Home Quiz on this lecture as practice for In-class quiz to be given SHARP at the start of next class.
