Professor Carlos Ricardo Soccol

Professor Carlos Ricardo Soccol is currently Head, Department of Bioprocess Engineering and Biotechnology, Federal University of Paraná, Brazil and Coordinator of the Master BIODEV-UNESCO program at UFPR. He has worked as post-doctoral researcher at the Institut ORSTOM and IRD, France and Université de Provence et de la Méditerranée, France. His main research focus is in the areas of solid-state fermentation, submerged fermentation, bioseparations, enzyme technology and tissue culture. Prof Soccol is HDR Professor at Ecole d'Ingénieurs Supériure of Luminy, France. He is Associate Editor of five international journals and Editor-in-Chief of Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology journal. He has received several awards, which include Science & Technology award of the Govt. of Paraná (1996), Scopus/Elsevier award (2009) and Honorary Doctorate Degree from the University Blaise Pascal, France (2010). Prof Soccol has published 14 books, 87 book chapters, 245 original research papers and has 37 patents.

Outstanding scientist of IFIBiop – 2012

Professor Patrick C Hallenbeck

Professor Patrick C Hallenbeck is a Full Professor at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Montreal. Professor Hallenbeck’s research interests are in microbial physiology, applied microbiology and biotechnology, biological energy production, anaerobic metabolism, and nitrogen fixation. He has served as the Canadian representative to Task 21 (Biohydrogen) of the Hydrogen Implementing Agreement of the IEA and is President of the Biohydrogen subdivision of the International Hydrogen Association. He is the editor of three books and over a hundred papers and book chapters. Dr. Hallenbeck is currently researching the role of metabolite sensing and signalling in the regulation of microbial metabolism, developing microalgal biofuels systems, and using metabolic engineering to increase biofuels production. He is a member of the editorial boards of Bioresource Technology, Marine Biotechnology and Frontiers in Microbiology.

Professor Athanasios A. Koutinas

Professor Athanasios A Koutinas is currently Emeritus Professor in the Department of Chemistry, University of Patras, Greece. Prof Koutinas joined the University of Patras in 1982 as lecturer and served there as Assistant Processor, Associate Professor and then Professor. He has published 140 research papers, four books, 11 book chapters, 105 conference presentations and six patents. Prof Koutinas research interests are in the area of food bio-processing. He has extensively worked on food fermentation, which has led the development of Multi Stage Fixed Bed Tower (MFBT) bioreactor at industrial scale. He has developed four new technologies in the area of food and fermentation technology among which the technology on the ‘Production of a new starter culture for multiple use in food bioprocessing’ has received distinguished honor by the Organization of Greek Manufacturers.

Professor Duu-Jong Lee

Professor Duu-Jong Lee is currently Life-Time University Professor of Chemical Engineering at the National Taiwan University (NTU) and Chair Professor and Dean of College of Engineering at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST), Taipei, Taiwan. Prof. Lee has been working in the area of environmental biological processes with special reference to aerobic and anaerobic treatment of wastewaters and solid wastes and their conversion to materials and energy. Prof. Lee has authored one book, nine book chapters, 12 review papers, five patents, 600 research papers in SCI journals, and more than 400 conference papers. He has been a recipient of Outstanding Fellow award from National Science Council, Taiwan (2009), Chang-Kang Scholar award (2007), 1000-Talent award (2011) and Scientific Chair Professor award of YZH Foundation (2012), besides prizes for best poster and paper presentations. His works on the aerobic granule processes, activated sludge floc models, and waste-to-bioenergy pathways have been widely acclaimed.

Professor Suresh D Pillai

Professor Suresh D Pillai is currently Director of the National Center for Electron Beam Research at Texas A&M University, USA. He is Professor of Microbiology and Texas AgriLife Research Faculty Fellow at Texas A&M University. He is a member of the graduate faculty of Food Science and Technology, Biotechnology, Veterinary Pathobiology, Toxicology, and Water Science. His research focuses on electron beam (E-Beam) technologies, bacterial cell-to-cell signaling, the molecular ecology of pathogens in natural and man-made ecosystems, and the use of novel technologies to concentrate, detect, and decontaminate pathogens. As Director of the National Center for Electron Beam Research he is actively engaged in advancing E-Beam technologies for cleaning, healing and feeding the world and beyond. His research has produced vaccines against Salmonella spp., and is helping develop space foods for NASA astronauts for long duration space missions. Prof. Pillai holds two patents, has published over 125 peer-reviewed research papers, authored two books, and a number of book chapters

Professor Rintu Banerjee

Dr Rintu Banerjee is presently holding the position of MNRE Chair Professorship in PK Sinha Centre for Bioenergy at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India. Her area of specialization is Enzymology, Food Biotechnology and Bioenergy Research. Prof Banerjee has six Indian and three International patents and has published one book, 19 book chapters and about 100 papers in peer reviewed journals. Prof banerjee has received Young Scientist Award from AFST, India (1995), Late Sinha Roy Memorial Award (2003), Woman Scientist Award (2004), Louis Pasteur Award (2009) from the Association of Microbiologists India and Recognition award in 2010 from the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences for her contribution in the area of Enzymology and its applications in Food sectors. She is Fellow of Biotech Research Society, India and Indian Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

Professor Guillermo R Castro

Professor Guillermo R Castro is currently Professor of Nanobiotechnology at the School of Sciences, National University of La Plata and Senior Research Scientist of the National Council for Science and Technology of Argentina. Previously, Prof Castro has worked at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA and Tufts University, USA. He has been working mainly in the area of enzyme technology. His studies have been focused on the isolation and characterization on wild-type enzyme producer microorganisms, enzyme characterization and production and non-aqueous enzymology. Prof. Castro has authored 13 book chapters, 60 peer reviewed international papers and one patent. He was recipient of awards and honours from the Third World Academy of Sciences, Italy; International Science Foundation, Sweden; National Council for Science and Technology, Argentina; Pew Foundation, USA; University of United Nations; Organization of American States, among others. Since 2007, he is working in drug delivery of unstable therapeutic molecules with undesirable strong side effects using native or modified biopolymers.

Professor Arun Goyal

Professor Arun Goyal is currently working as the Head, Department of Biotechnology, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, India. Prior to this, Professor Goyal has worked in different capacities such as post-doctoral researcher, Visiting Scholar and Scientist at the University College Dublin, Ireland; Ohio State University, USA; Wayne State University, USA; Birla Institute of Scientific Research), Jaipur, India and Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. Since 2000 he is in IIT Guwahati. His major areas of research are Applied Microbiology, Enzymology and Molecular & Structural Biology. His major accomplishments are microbial carbohydrates and carbohydrate enzymes. Professor Goyal has over 90 publications and 150 conference communications to his credit. Professor Goyal has won Dr CV Raman Award (2010), Rashtriya Gaurav Award (2007) and JV Bhat Award for Best Paper published in Indian Journal of Microbiology (2007). He is Fellow of the Biotech Research Society, India; Association of Microbiologists of India; National Academy of Biological Sciences; and National Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

Professor Jong Moon Park

Professor Jong Moon Park is currently Professor of Environmental Biotechnology at the Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), Pohang, Korea. He has been working in the area of energy and environmental biotechnology with special reference to biomass and biorefinery, and on biofuel production from the algal biomass (both micro- and macro-algae). Prof Park has authored one book chapter, 19 patents and 192 research papers in peer reviewed journals. He has been a recipient of Presidential Young Scientist Award from KAST (1997), Queen Elizabeth II Fellowship from British Council (1999) and Thomson Scientific Citation Laureate Award (2007), besides nominated as Namgo Endowed Chair Professor of POSTECH (2007). His current research focus is on e works on the biofuel production from algal biomass using metabolic engineering as a tool.

Young Scientist Award of IFIBiop - 2011

Dr Parameswaran Binod

Dr Parameswaran Binod is currently working as a Scientist in the Biotechnology Division, National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST), CSIR, Trivandrum, India. He obtained his PhD in Biotechnology from Kerala University, Trivandrum. Dr Binod worked as post-doctoral fellow at the Korea Institute for Energy Research, Daejeon, South Korea in 2008. He has also worked at the Technical University of Budapest, Hungary during 2005. He joined CSIR-NIIST in 2009 as Project Scientist at the Centre for Biofuels. Dr Binod obtained Gold medal for securing top marks at University level during graduation. His major areas of research are Biofuels, Biopolymers and Industrial Enzymes Technology. He has published 21 research papers, three review papers and 12 book chapters, apart from several conference communications.

Dr. Lee Keat Teong

Dr. Lee Keat Teong obtained his PhD degree in Chemical Engineering from the Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2004. He is currently Associate Professor and Deputy Dean (Research and Postgraduate studies) at the School of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia; he is also a Honorary Professorial Research Fellow at SEGi University College, Malaysia. His research interest is mainly in renewable energy and energy sustainability. Dr. Lee has co-authored five book chapters, 28 review papers and 95 research papers in peer reviewed international journals. Dr. Lee is currently the Editor-in-Chief for Journal of Advanced Chemical Engineering, Associate Editor for American Journal of Biomass and Bioenergy and Editorial Board Member for Bioresource Technology, ISRN Renewable Energy & Journal of Engineering.

Young Scientist Award of IFIBiop - 2012

Dr Reeta Rani Singhania

Dr Reeta Rani Singhania obtained her PhD degree in 2012 from the Cochin University of Science and Technology, India. She is currently post-doctoral researcher in the Laboratoire de Génie Chimique et Biochimique, Institut Pascal, University Blaise Pascal, Clermont-Ferrand, France. Dr Singhania has been working in the areas of bioprocess technology and microbial & enzyme technology with special emphasis on cellulases and glucose tolerant beta-glucosidase from filamentous fungi for bioethanol production. Presently, she is working in a major integrated project, which has its final aim to produce biohydrogen utilizing agro-wastes. Dr Singhania has published 10 book chapters, 19 research papers in peer reviewed journals and 26 conference communications. She has been recipient of AU-CBT Excellence Award from the Biotech Research Society, India (2008), Elsevier Best Paper Award (2007) and a Best Poster Award (2002). Her works on the cellulase and beta-glucosidase production by solid-state fermentation and submerged fermentation using filamentous fungi for bioethanol application have been widely acclaimed.
