FELLOWS-2015

Dr S Venkata Mohan

Dr S Venkata Mohan is currently working as Principal Scientist at the CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad, India. Dr. Mohan has been working in the domain of Environmental Bioengineering and Biofuels. Dr. Mohan has authored 290 research articles, 30 chapters for books and has eight patents with more than 9800 citations, and h-index of 54. Dr Mohan is recipient of most coveted award in India, i.e., Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Engineering Sciences for the year 2014. He has also received several awards and honours, such as National Bioscience award-2012 by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, Prosper.net-Scopus Young Researcher Award in Sustainable Development-2010 under Energy Category by United Nations University and Elsevier, NASI-Scopus Young Scientist Award- 2010 in Earth, Oceanographic & Environmental Sciences by National Academy of Sciences, India and Elsevier, etc. Dr Mohan is elected fellow of National Academy of Engineering, the Biotech Research Society, India, Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation, Andhra Pradesh/Telangana Akademy of Sciences, Institution of Engineers, and Member of European Academy of Sciences and Arts. Dr Mohan is subject Editor for the Journal of Energy, Associate Editor for Frontiers in Environmental Science and Frontiers in Energy Research and is serving on editorial board of several journals, viz., Bioresource Technology, The Open Waste Management, Advances in Energy Research.

Professor Huu Hao Ngo

Dr Huu Hao Ngo is currently Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Technology Sydney, Sydney, Australia. Prof Ngo has been working in the area of biological waste treatment, water – waste – bioenergy nexus, greenhouse gas emission control, etc. He has authored four books, 28 book chapters, five patents and more than 450 research papers, with h index of 41 and > 6000 citations, and has been a recipient of Research Fellow Award from Australia Academy of Science (AAS)–Korean Science and Engineering Foundation (1998), AAS-Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (2000) and AAS- French Embassy (2003). Prof. Ngo is Editor of Bioresource Technology, Elsevier and is also a founder and Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Water Sustainability, while being editorial board member of numerous international journals.

Professor Jonathan Woon Chung Wong

Dr Jonathan Woon Chung Wong is currently Professor at the Department of Biology, Hong Kong Baptist University and Director of Sino-Forest Applied Research Centre for Pearl River Delta Environment. Prof Wong has been working in the area of solid waste management with specialization in bioconversion of organic wastes for energy and biomass production using innovative composting and anaerobic digestion technology. He has published over 400 SCI publications and conference proceedings with citation of > 8500 and h-index of 52. He has also edited six books, ten Conference Proceedings, nine book chapters and seven special issues for the journals. He also has 11 patents on composting, anaeorobic digestion and bioflocculation research topics. Prof Wong was bestowed with Medal of Honour by the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2011 for his service and contribution to the Environment, and appointed as Justice of Peace in 2014.

Dr Suzana Yusup

Dr Suzana Yusup is Cluster Leader of Biomass Research Group in the Center of Biofuel & Biochemical Research and is an Associate Professor at Chemical Engineering Department, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia. Her research interest is in the area of biomass conversion to fuel and biochemicals, material development and green processes. She has 16 patents and authored one book, 16 book chapters, 131 papers and 60 conference communications with h index of 21 and 1373 citations. She received Malaysia’s Rising Star Award (2016). 2nd prize in the Elsevier Green and Sustainable Chemistry Challenge (2016), Top Research Scientist Malaysia (TRSM) (2016), Asia Research Award (2012) from The Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan (SCEJ), and Creativity Award, Geneva (2011).

OUTSTANDING SCIENTIST AWARD-2015

Prof Rajeshwar D Tyagi

Dr Rajeshwar D Tyagi is Professor of Biochemical Engineering at Institut national de la recherche Scientifique – Eau, terre, et environnement, (INRS-ETE), University of Québec, Canada. He is also Adjunct Professor at University of Missouri Columbia, USA and AMITY Rajasthan (India). Prof Tyagi holds Canada Research Chair and is the member of Hall of Excellence of University of Québec. Prof Tyagi is also a member of European Academy of Sciences and Arts; Academician, European Academy of Sciences & Arts. The areas of his research interests include water/wastewater treatment, bioconversion of wastewater and wastewater sludge into value-added products (biopseticides, bioplastics, biodiesels) and hazardous/solids waste management. Prof. Tyagi has authored 16 books, 86 book chapters, 325 articles, 66 conference proceedings, nine patents, 62 invited conferences, 229 other conference presentation and 22 research reports. He is Associate Editor of Practice Periodical of Hazardous, Toxic & Radioactive Waste Management- Am. Soc. Civil Engineering and serves on the editorial boards of Process Biochemistry and Bioresource Technology.

Prof Tyagi has won several awards and honors, which include Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Samman-2016 for outstanding services, achievements and contributions for keeping the ‘Flag of India high’ Awarded by NRI Welfare Society of India, Superior Achievement Award, Excellence in Environmental Engineering Award of American Academy of Environmental Engineers, The 2010 Global project Innovation Award: Applied Research by the International Water Association, Life- Time Achievement Award (Specialist medal) for Outstanding Research contributions in wastewater sludge management by the International Water Association, four most important American Society of Civil Engineering awards: RUDOLPH HERING MEDAL in 2008, ASCE State-of-Art Award 2007 & 2014, and Wesley Horner Award 2007.

YOUNG SCIENTISTS AWARD-2015

Professor Yonghong Wu

Dr Yonghong Wu is currently Professor of Environmental Biotechnology at Institute of Soil Science Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Head of Zigui Ecological Experiment Station of the Three Gorges Project, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing, China. His research interests include nutrient management in wetland, non-point source pollution control, periphytic biofilm reactor, periphyton ecology, nanotechnology and nanotoxicology. He has 80 publications with more than 1000 citations (h index 16). He has authored a book on Periphyton: Functions and Application in Environmental Remediation published by Elsevier Publisher. He has also ten patents, out of which six have been sold to companies. He has received more than ten awards and fellowships from Chinese government and professional societies.

Dr Baskar Gurunathan

Dr Baskar Gurunathan is currently Professor of Biotechnology at St. Joseph’s College of Engineering, Chennai, India. Dr Baskar has been working in the area of chemical engineering and biotechnology with special reference to the production of therapeutic enzymes, biofuels, nanomedicine and nanocatalyst. Dr Baskar has authored five book chapters and 88 review and research papers, with h index of 13 and >400 citations. Dr Baskar is the recipient of Outstanding Researcher on renewable energy award from the Indian Society for Technical Education in 2016.

FELLOW-2016

Professor Jian Chen

Dr Jian Chen is currently Professor of Industrial Biotechnology at the School of Biotechnology, Jiangnan University, and National Engineering Laboratory of Cereal Fermentation Technology, Wuxi, China. Prof Chen has been working in the area of fermentation engineering and food biotechnology, specifically in the area of microbial production of various biomolecules, ranging from food and textile enzymes to organic acids and vitamins, and regulation mechanism investigation and application to fermentation food safety control. Prof Chen has authored 25 books, 10 US patents and 487 research and review papers, with h index of 35 and >7000 citations. He has been a Fellow of International Academy of Food Science and Technology (2012).

Professor Datta Madamwar

Dr Datta Madamwar is currently Professor at Post-Graduate Department of Biosciences and Dean, Faculty of Science, Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidyanagar, Gujarat, India. Prof. Madamwar’s major interest includes microbial community structure and functional potential of various industrial landfill ecosystems and biotransformations in non-aqueous medium. He has one patent, 225 papers and several book chapters with h index of 45 and 6275 citations. He is an elected Fellow of the Biotech Research Society, India; Association of Microbiologists of India; Association of Biotechnology and Pharmacy, and Gujarat Science Academy.

Professor Indu Shekhar Thakur

Dr Indu Shekhar Thakur is currently Professor in the School of Environmental Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. Professor Thakur has been working on bioremediation, bioconversion and detoxification of natural and organic compounds in industrial effluents, municipal waste water, agriculture waste, and sequestration of carbon dioxide. He has four patents, 138 papers, 23 book chapters and two books with h index of 25. Prof Thakur is an elected Fellow of the Biotech Research Society, India.

Dr Thallada Bhaskar

Dr Thallada Bhaskar is currently Principal Scientist & Head, Thermo-Catalytic Processes Area at the Bio-Fuels Division, CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum, Dehradun, India. Dr Bhaskar’s current interests are in the area of thermo-catalytic processes for lignocellulosic and aquatic biomass conversion into value-added hydrocarbons, including medicinally active bio-oil compounds and hydrocarbons suitable as blending components for fuel oi/transportation fuels/petrochemical feedstock. In addition, he has been working on the conversion of waste plastics from municipal and e-waste. Dr Bhaskar has edited two books, authored 18 book chapters, 13 patents and 120 papers, with h index of 31 and >2900 citations. He has been a recipient of Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry, Fellow of the Biotech Research Society, India, Fellow of International Society for Energy, Environment and Sustainable, Chinese Academy of Sciences Presidential Fellow, Most Progressive Researcher Award from FSRJ, Japan and Distinguished Researcher Award from AIST, Japan.

OUTSTANDING SCIENTIST AWARD-2016

Professor Akihiko Kondo

Professor Akihiko Kondo is currently Professor and Dean of Graduate School of Science, Technology and Innovation at Kobe University, Kobe, Japan. He is also Team Leader of the Cell Factory Research Team at RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science, Yokohama, Japan. Prof Kondo has been working in the area of biomass pretreatment technologies, cell surface display systems for yeast, bacteria and fungus, metabolic pathway design methods, metabolic analysis technologies, microbial cell factories for production of biofuels and various chemicals from biomass, cyanobacteria for production of starch, oil and chemicals from CO2. Prof Kondo has authored five books, 69 book chapters and 520 original/review papers, with h index of 65 and >18,000 citations. He has been a recipient of Excellent Young Scientist Award of the Chemical Engineering Society of Japan, Excellent Paper Award of the Society for Biotechnology Japan (four times), Achievement Award of the Society for Biotechnology Japan, Fellow of American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, etc.

YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARD-2016

Dr Sudhir Pratap Singh

Dr Sudhir Pratap Singh is currently Scientist at the Center of Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing, Mohali, India. Dr Singh has been working in the area of biotechnology and synthetic biology with special reference to plant molecular biology and development of biosynthetic catalysts for biotransformation of agro-industrial by-products and residues into value-added biomolecules. Dr Singh has authored 33 research papers, four review articles and book chapters and has five patents to his credit. He has been a recipient of Beam-time award from Canadian Light Source, Canada and European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, France and Early Carrier Research Award-2016 from SERB, DST, Govt. of India.

DISTINGUISHED AWARDS-2017

Professor Claude-Gilles Dussap

Prof Claude-Gilles Dussap is Head of the team of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering in the Institut Pascal (University Clermont Auvergne - CNRS). He has a strong experience in mathematical modeling of biological kinetics, thermodynamic equilibrium properties of aqueous solutions and of reactor characteristics and has significantly contributed in the design and the mathematical modelling of MELiSSA (Micro-Ecological Life Support System Alternative) ecosystem, which is the biological life support system developed by European Spatial Agency for long duration spatial missions. His main domain of expertise covers the process engineering aspects of the bioreactors design, modelling, scale-up and control in relation with the food quality and nutritional properties of food recipes for astronauts. He has published ~150 papers. Prof Dussap has contributed enormously for the establishment and growth of International Bioprocessing Association, right from 2004 when it was founded as ICBF in France together with Prof Ashok Pandey and Prof Christian Larroche, re-naming it in 2010 as IFIBiop and then in 2016 as IBA as Founding Chairman. His ideas and approached have helped in shaping up IBA significantly.

The International Bioprocessing Association (An International Forum on Industrial Bioprocesses) is privileged to honour Professor Claude-Gilles Dussap with DISTINGUISHED AWARD of the Association for the year 2017 for his significant contributions in Biochemical Engineering and growth of the IBA.

Professor Christian Larroche

Prof Christian Larroche is Director of Polytech Clermont-Ferrand, a graduate school of engineering of University Clermont-Auvergne, France. He is also member of the research laboratory Institut Pascal and of the laboratory of excellence ImobS3 at the same university. He has strong research skills and expertise in the area of applied microbiology and biochemical engineering. He is author of ~220 documents, including 114 articles, three patents, 15 book chapters and 24 co-editions of books or journal special issues. He is editor of Bioresource Technology.

Prof Larroche has contributed enormously for the establishment and growth of International Bioprocessing Association, right from 2004 when it was founded as ICBF in France together with Prof Ashok Pandey and Prof CG Dussap, re-naming it in 2010 as IFIBiop and then in 2016 as IBA as Administrator and Vice-Chairman. His ideas and approached have helped in shaping up IBA significantly.
