The Extended Essay is the most challenging aspect of the Diploma Program, but the most often cited reason why students feel they have a leg up on their peers once they begin their college career. Former Diploma Program students often say they are able to confidently complete research papers in college while their classmates struggle and stress over the process.
The EE is a research paper of no more than 4000 words in one of the approved subject areas. Students have an EE supervisor who aids them in the process of researching, writing, and citing sources and conducts a short interview, or viva voce, with the student upon completion of the EE.
The EE must be carefully cited and formally presented for external grading by someone assigned by IB. Up to three points are awarded for a combination of the EE and TOK grades.
