There are many reasons for practicing Iaido and some of these are similar to other martial arts; Iaido however has many unique features.
Like other martial arts there are physical benefits from training; Iaido builds strong legs, torso, and arms. Iaido also builds stamina and concentration but in a different way to other more energetic martial arts. Iaido strengthens by long term careful repetition and refinement of complex movements.
Iaido promotes a calm mind. Long term practice can lead to a serenity and clarity of outlook similar to that achieved by practitioners of Zen, yoga and other meditation arts.
Regular practice provides a good source of stress relief. Being part of a unique group of people is also very rewarding as is the social interation and friendship that goes with a long term endeavour such as learning /practicing iaido.
