FOUNDER
The origin and hereditary head of Ise Shinoh Ryu Iaido, Shinoda Ouho Masatsune was born at Akuiami, Gifu-ken in 1888. Gifu is surrounded largely by mountains, hills and high plains. Seki in Gifu-ken is an old sword and knife making centre famous for its blades. Near here was fought the unifying battle of Sekigahara in 1600, which changed the history of Japan.
During his boyhood he trained in Kendo and Kanji at the Gifu Police School. He was taught by Ichikawa Samasuke, head instructor in those times.
When he was 18 years old in 1905, he was taken to Mansyu (Manchuria) in China by General Fukuhima Yamamasa. He rose to be an instructor there on General Yamamasa’s staff at the dojo built in Dairen Matubara Park After returning to Japan in 1909 he met a man named Iinuma Sadao. He was the only man remaining alive mastering the Byakkotai, working at the Sendai Kanriyoku (Sendai Telegram Headquarters) who taught him Shinto Ryu and he also studied under another master, Ashina Danjyou, from Hokkushin Itto Ryu. Under the guidance of these gentlemen Shinoda continued his studies until April 1924. He was given the right to open the first Hokushin Shinoh Ryu Dojo in Takamihaba, Kagoshima-ken.Which consisted of the cultural arts of Kembu, Shigen Shibu & Iaido.
In Japan Hokushin Shinoh Ryu is made up of many different “Kai” (authorised groups), headed by experienced teachers who are qualified and obey the schools rules. Its disciplines include Shigen, Shibu, Kenbu
IAIDO 居合道
Iaido later separated from this group as it is not a cultural performance, but a serious martial art this was to to save confusion between the two philosophies.
His senior student, Enoki Ouhnou took charge when Shinoda sensei built a second school dojo in Oimatsu cho, Nakaku, Nagoya City. This was burned down in an American bomber attack in 1945 along with many other buildings, including Nagoya Castle.
With the sponsorship of Tokugawa Yoshi Chika, he returned to Gifu and trained many students at a new dojo at the edge of Kenchuji Temple.
In 1963 (eighteen years later) a new dojo was opened at Okute, Chikusa ku Nagoya city
