SS Connection

For the Social Studies portion of my project I have written an essay. My PBL project was image creation using functions. In order to present this information, I will write it on this portion of my website.

Mathematics in Art

Math and art have always been an essential part of our history. In fact, mathematics and art have very strong ties with each other. Both have been strongly represented for centuries, and continue to be essential in today’s society. Even since ancient times, math has been present in art.

Ratios

Math is an essential in architecture. The ancient Egyptians demonstrated their understanding of geometry and ratios in the construction of the infamous Great Pyramids. In ancient Greece, temples were mapped out and constructed, also with the help of ratios. Nowadays, we use those same mathematic principles to plan out blueprints for architectural projects. Small drafts of structures are mapped out, and math is used to construct the plans large-scale. Precise measurement is key to making stable buildings.

are also used in art. One of the most famous examples of mathematic representation in art is most likely the Renaissance period. During this period, artists really started experimenting with their art. Probably the most well-known person who experimented with such was Leonardo da Vinci. He used arches, circles, and lines to make his artworks as precise as possible. Da Vinci also used geometric principles to plan out his inventions.

Another great example of how math relates to art is in origami. Origami is the ancient art of paper-folding which originated in Japan. Measurement and precision is used to fold paper into shapes to create a 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional figure. The end result shows how the manipulation of shapes can lead to the creation of a completely different shape. A fantastic example of the end result is the origami crane. Origami demonstrates how important precision is--both in math and art.

Altogether, art and math go together like bread and butter. Regardless of their connection, both are important in our society. Of course, together they can be even more beneficial.
