Introduction: How can you make an image by using functions and graphing them? For this project (Image Creation Using Equations), I am going to be creating a picture on a coordinate plane by creating and graphing a set of equations.
Materials:
Graphing paper
Lined paper
Pencil
Pen
Colored pencils/markers
Poster
Protractor
Procedure:
Decide upon an image you can make on the graph
Create a coordinate plane on the graph paper
Create a minimum of 10 equations
List the equations
Graph them on the coordinate plane to create the image
Principle/Essential Understanding: My project involves the creation and graphing of functions on a coordinate plane. The process of it all demonstrates how algebra skills can be important in everyday life. My comprehension of functions and graphing will allow me to create an image from equations.
Reflection Questions:
⦁ How did you know which image would be good to do for this project?
I decided upon an image which had a lot of different lines and angles because I figured that I would be able to make up many different equations for it.
⦁ Can functions create anything?
Yes. As my project shows, functions can be used to create images on a coordinate grid. Functions can also be used to do various other things in relation to grids.
⦁ What kind of functions did you use in this project?
I used various types of equations--mainly linear and nonlinear ones. I tried to decide on ones that would be easy to plot on the grid and were good for creating an image.
⦁ Did you use any linear functions?
Yes; I used quite a few linear functions. I felt as if they would be the best for creating an image out of.
⦁ Did you use any quadratic functions?
I didn't really use any quadratic functions because I wanted my image to have a lot of sharp lines and angles.
⦁ Did you use any polynomial functions?
I didn't use any polynomial functions for the same reason as #5.
⦁ Is your design symmetric according to any access?
My image is perfectly symmetrical. I felt as if it would work out the best--and look the best--if I made a symmetrical design.
⦁ How did you decide on the formula of the function?
I chose formulas based on the lines I made.
⦁ How did you construct that formula?
I created a draft of my design, then created functions which produced similar lines to those in my draft.
⦁ What was the most difficult part of this project?
I would say that the most difficult part of my project was deciding upon equations which best fit my design. It took me quite some time to actually construct the functions.
⦁ How would you describe your understandings of this project and how this is beneficial in learning Algebra?
I believe that this project strengthened my understanding of functions. In the majority of Algebra, it's beneficial to know how to create and graph functions. It's also probably important to know how to create things from functions.
