Introduction:

My project is on finding ways to make buildings safer in an earthquake. I modeled two different ways that would help keep buildings safe. The first building was a house model This one skates on isolators instead of shaking and crumbling under the pressure of an earthquake. The next model is on a tower style building. This building has support built in to keep it up in an earthquake and  has a moat around it so that it can sway instead of shaking. I made these to demonstrate what each part will look like and what they will do. 

Driving Question: Can a building be constructed that can withstand an earthquake? 

Buildings can be made that can withstand earthquakes. This does not mean that the building will not have any damage at all, but it will not be completely destroyed in the earthquake. There are many methods to this. The first one that I found was putting the building on isolators. This allows the building to skate on the base its built on instead of shake and crumble in an earthquake. Next I found a method that involved making the roof light and flexible. Lastly I found a method of allowing the building to sway instead of shake in the earthquake. This includes putting in a moat and putting a counter balance on the top. Using any of these methods will help keep people and buildings safe.
