How does light bend?
Water Bottle
Laser
Scissors
My Materials:
Introduction:
In my project, the light bends because of the refraction and reflection. The light is bending because of those two things and because i am going to cut the bottle in the middle.
Procedure:
In my project, I have to add water to and then cut a piece of the bottle and the turn the lights off and then shine the laser into the cut slit of the bottle. After you do that you start to analyze the different ways the light goes. The different way the light bends.
Safety Regulations:
It will be best to wear gloves but it is not necessary.
Scientific Principle:
My project is titled Bending The Light.
Snell's law is very important in this project. It helps find the relationships from refraction and incidence. When the laser beam goes through the plastic bottle, that is called total internal refraction. Refraction is happening while the laser (light) passes through the plastic bottle, and when i cut or bend the bottle, the light refracts. A difference of wave-font and medias.
Investigation Part:
What is Snell's Law?
Snell's Law, which is also known as Descartes' Law is used to find the relationship between refraction and angles of incidence. Which is the light passing passing through the water bottle that was cut. That causes the angles of the light to bend and refract, and it will continue to refract as long as the water continues to flow.
How does light bend?
Light bends because it passes between two mediums with different indexes.
What are some products or objects that use total internal reflection in their operation?
Diamonds, flashlights, lenses, fingerprinting devices, etc, there are objects that you total internal reflection around you and you don't even know it!
What is refraction?
Refraction is the movement of light waves when being disrupted by a substance, which causes the waves of the light to travel at different speeds.
Would this demonstration work with olive oil instead of water?
No, because index of refraction of oil is bigger than index of refraction of water, so therefore it cannot work.
What is total internal reflection?
Total Internal Reflection is when refraction happens to light and causes waves to become bigger and change in speed. When the laser goes through the water bottle total internal reflection happens and that is why the later on the opposite side of the water bottle becomes distorted and goes in different directions.
