A good example of puzzles being used in history is when the first jigsaw puzzle was created in 1760, when John Spilsbury, a British engraver and cartographer, mounted a map on a sheet of wood, which he then sawed around the outline of each individual country on the map. He then used the resulting pieces as an aid to the teaching of geography. After becoming popular among the public, this kind of teaching aid remained the primary use of jigsaw puzzles until about 1820. As time progressed puzzles continued to be used in schools to teach about the new countries appearing as world maps began to be drawn more specifically and more accurate. Puzzles continued to progress even more not just as a means to learn geography but, now it progressed into learning geometric shapes and transformations. Which many puzzle creators over the years have accomplished. Though puzzles were used to teach people about the geography of the world, they have progressed into helping us teach ourselves not only geography but, geometry too.
