INTRODUCTION
When there is a fire, we are advised to crawl close to the ground because smoke rises. We know that when something boils, vapor rises into the air.
Driving Question
Could it be possible that I could make smoke fall instead of rise? If placed in a container, will smoke fall instead of rise, and if it does, why? In this project I will burn a sheet of paper in such a way, that the smoke goes into a container where it should fall.
MATERIALS
In order to do my project, you will need the following:
1 airtight container with a single opening
Paper or another flammable material that fits in the hole.
matches/lighter
PROCEDURE
Step 1- Roll the paper into a shape that will fit in the hole, but block out excess air.
Step 2- Wedge the paper in the hole in such a way that it is half in and half out.
Step 3- Light the paper on fire.
Step 4- Wait until you see smoke start to fall into the container and videotape it.
SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLE
Smoke usually rises because oxygen is a heavier gas that forces the smoke up with carbon dioxide as it falls. However, in a container with no oxygen in it, the smoke becomes the heaviest gas in the room and it falls while the carbon dioxide rises.
SAFETY REGULATIONS
Do not play with the fire.
Have a fire extinguisher available.
Do not do this project without adult supervision.
