My PBL Project

Introduction: Why doesn't the water spill when you spin the plate in a loop? When a cup of water is placed on a table that is attached with strings and swung around it is creating centripetal force. The liquid in the container will not spill even if its swung at a 360 degrees the force is pulling the liquid back into its place witch make it seem like its not moving at all. Why doesn't the water in the cup spill when it reaches an upside down side? centripetal force is happening at that very moment, the weights and the force of the circular motion keeps the object or cup of water in place like if it would be in normal gravitational weight..

The Materials:

1.square shape wood with holes on each corner so string can be attached and tied for the use of swinging the object everything is about a foot to a foot and and half in length

2. String going around the holes.

3.cup of water sitting on top, for example the slower it swings the less volume it has which can cause the container to fall out of place witch in the other hand if its a really hard swing then it would be less likely that the container would be close to moving as it has a much grater volume and centripetal force acting on them.

The Procedure:

1. Making sure that everything is balanced as some of the string can get out position and can really affect the demonstration,

2. Place the cup or container with water or any liquid or even without,

3.Grabbing the strings and swinging it in a circular motion and with a constant pattern and watch as the container with liquid shouldn't move out its place and also observe as the liquid didn't fall out or spilled out.

Precautions:

Making sure there's no people to close as a safety precaution or if there's any imbalance in the table that may cause the container to fall.

This is the since of Centripetal Force.

Scientific Principle:

In simple terms, it is the centripetal force which keeps the plate and cup moving at a relatively constant speed. And the direction of the centripetal force is towards the center of the circle. Plate is going under a relatively constant speed because of the tension changing depending on the position of the plate.

Safety Regulation: Staying a few feet back and handling all sharp edges carefully.
