The squadron

The inspiration for the name of the squadron came from Derek Robinson, who has written several excellent novels about WW1 and WW2 aerial warfare, most of them featuring the fictional "Hornet" squadron. There are three books about the Royal Flying Corps. The first book, War Story takes place in 1916 where most of the combat was 1:1 affairs and the pilots were flying the Fe2b. The second book Hornet's Sting takes place in 1917, following the events during "Bloody april" and the last book (actually the first one written) Goshawk Squadron is set in 1918 where the squadron is flying the Se5a. Characters that show up in more than one book are: Capt. Wooley, Lt (later adjudant) Kellaway, McKenzie, Paxton and O'Neill.
