Dues:
The payment of dues is required and covers local and national fees, as well as the cost of the NJHS t-shirt, the end-of-year party, and induction expenses. The deadline to submit dues has been extended to December 13.
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Rojas. If a financial hardship is preventing you from paying the dues, feel free to reach out to any of the sponsors for assistance.

COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS - The deadline for your community service hours is Sunday May 5th, which is fast approaching. You should be close to or have already reached 15 hours of volunteering, which is the minimum. If you've already finished your 15 hours, you're still encouraged to continue to volunteer! If you haven't finished your hours yet, don't worry! There's still a bunch of opportunities coming up to get them.
POLK PAWLOOZA - On April 5th, which is this Friday, Polk is hosting its annual Polk Pawlooza, and they're looking for volunteers. It will last from 3:45-7:00pm, so you can get a good 3 hours from it! To sign up, the link is under the Volunteer Opportunities tab of the website, aswell as in the Remind.
EPISD REGISTRATION RALLY - On April 20th, 8 volunteers will be needed to give tours around Hornedo. It will be from 9:00am to 12:00. If you would like to volunteer, speak to Mrs. Navarette.
MIGHTY MUJER - On May 4th, a volunteer opportunity for the Mighty Mujer Triatholon will be held at Memorial Park. If you would like to volunteer, you have to do so through the race's offical website: https://www.mightymujertriathlon.com/elpaso
END OF YEAR PARTY - May 7th is our NJHS end of year party! More info will come as we get closer to the date.

SALVATION ARMY FUNDRAISER UPDATE - So far we have raised 1,095 dollars! Let's keep it going! Only 33 people have set up their page so far, so make sure to set yours up. Also don't forget to share your page with family and friends!
CENTER AGAINST FAMILY VIOLENCE GIFT DONATION - At the meeting you should have gotten a green paper with all the information on what to get for the kid you chose. If you weren't able to attend the meeting, stop by Mrs. Navarrette's room to pick one out, there are 16 left. Don't forget to also buy pajamas of the correct size for your kid. Make sure to register your child with the form linked on your green slip or sent on the remind. Make sure to have your gifts wrapped with the bottom of your green slip attached and delivered to Mrs. Navarrette or Mrs. Rojas' room by December 12.

1. OFFICER INTRODUCTIONS – Congratulations to our 2023-24 officers! President: Matthew Ramirez, Vice-President: Ginger Patton, and Secretary: Ascher Vicini.
2. SHIRT UPDATE – The design will be a long-sleeved black shirt with pink text. The cost for the shirt was covered when you paid your dues. Final product should be posted next week. If you didn’t fill out a shirt size slip at the meeting, stop my Mrs. Rojas’ room to get one.
3. SALVATION ARMY FUNDRAISER – Virtual fundraiser for the Salvation Army will begin on November 15th. $10 = 1 hour of volunteer time.
4. CAFV GIFT DONATION – We will be donating gifts to the Center Against Family Violence starting on November 28th. If you participate, you will get 4 community service hours. The gift will include the child's gift request and pajamas. You will be able to select the child at the meeting on November 28th.
5. COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS UPDATE – The community service hours will get updated at a later date.

The videos and electronic ballot will be available on 9/26 and 9/27 only. Only votes cast from a member's EPISD login will be accepted. If a member votes more than once, their vote will be voided.

LAST NJHS MEETING!!! :))))
COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS- Your hours should be about almost done or close to being completed. Remember the minimum number of hours is 15! The hours were originally due on April 15th but they were extended to April 30th since we have some more events coming up! PLEASE submit your hours no later than May 1st! If you have your minimum requirement of hours try to let other people sign up for hours first because we constantly get the same people! If you are behind on hours please do not hesitate to sign up! Mrs. Navarrette has entered the updated community service hours if you have not checked please see if you have your minimum requirements! Remember you can turn in your hours online or on a paper copy. Mrs. Navarrette enters the NJHS meeting for you, and she entered the Salvation army, and Hornedo Fest. SO DO NOT put those events on your papers or documents! If you have any questions ask one of our sponsors or officers!
HOSTING TRACK MEET AT FRANKLIN HIGH SCHOOL- Hornedo will be hosting a track meet at Franklin High School on April 15th. This will happen most likely in the morning from around 8-12pm LOTS of volunteers are needed! Sign up will be soon make sure to watch out for the remind!
HOSTING REGISTRATION EVENT- Hornedo will be hosting a registration event on April 22nd. This is something new and not something they have done before. They are asking for 10 volunteers that day. More information to come and look out for the sign up!
HOSTING ELEMENTARY UIL AT HORNEDO- Hornedo will be hosting an Elementary UIL event at Hornedo on April 29th. Mrs. Navarrette is looking at about 20 volunteers total. 10 volunteers for about a 3 hour shift and another 10 for a second 3 hour shift. More information to come and watch out for the sign up!
NJHS INDUCTION FOR 7TH GRADERS/ NJHS PIZZA PARTY- On May 9th after school in the cafeteria NJHS will be having our pizza party! YAH! Then later in the evening will be the Induction for the upcoming 8th graders next year. Officers will be having big jobs there but NJHS volunteers are needed to help set up and be at the ceremony. There will be more information coming up when the time gets closer. ALMOST DONE WITH 8TH GRADE!!! YOU GOT THIS! :))))

COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS- Most of our members are close to reaching their minimum number of community service hours which is 15. If you are not sure how to enter your hours go see Mrs. Navarrette or ask a fellow NJHS member. If you have already reached your minimum number of hours, that doesn't mean you shouldn't help out! Mrs. Navarrette constantly sees the same faces to volunteer and we would like to see some new members to help out! You are here to serve your community! We are counting on all our fellow members! If you have any questions about your hours please don't hesitate to ask.
FRONT OFFICE ORGANIZING CLOTHING - If you are interested in helping the front office organize uniform clothes please see Mrs. Navarrette! It will be weekly and you can help out once a week or more if you would like!
PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE CART - Next week on February 16th we are going to need volunteers to help out with our cart that gives teachers snacks and drinks. Be on the look out for the sign up!
NO-EXCUSES UNIVERSITY CLEAN UP - Hornedo is not going to be a No Excuses University anymore. We are going to need a lot of helping hands to take the No-Excuses University off the fences and they must ALL come out. There will be a sign up for in the future. Whoever can come please come! It will be an hours worth of service but, it will most likely take 30 minutes if lot's of our members show up!
THE PRICELESS HEART FOUNDATION - A teacher at Franklin High School lost her 10 year old son two years ago in an accident and his name was Price. To honor his memory they set up a foundation annually. One of the things they are doing is collecting toiletries which are things you need to stay nice and clean. For example, shampoo, lotion, soap etc. They are also helping out refugees that are here in EL Paso. There will be a message THIS FRIDAY about this foundation. On the weekend ask your parents to add some toiletries to their cart! IT MUST BE NEW PRODUCTS. DO NOT bring something already used. We will be partnering with student council. This WILL NOT be counted on your hours it is just something nice we do for others and it is a good deed.

SALVATION ARMY RED KETTLE- Thank you to everyone who has signed up and donated! We are currently at $3,061! Keep up the good work! Make sure to share with friends, family members, and relatives. Let's make sure we hit our goal!
COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS- The community service hours have been updated. Make sure to turn in your hours digitally or on the form and submit it to Mrs. Navarrette. Once per month the hours will be updated so, if you think your hours are not right just make sure your forms are turned in so they will be up to date. Remember the minimum number of hours you need to complete are 15.
SHIRT UPDATE- Thank you to our officers, Taylor, Ana Sofia, and Audrey and our sponsor Mrs. Rojas for making this possible! You worked so hard. If you still have not picked up your shirt make sure to go to room 214, Mrs. Rojas Room to pick up your shirt.
CENTER AGAINST FAMILY VIOLENCE- You should have selected a yellow paper and a white slip at todays meeting. If you were not able to select a child you do not have to participate in this. You will write your name on the white slip and turn it into one of the officers or sponsors. please DO NOT take the white strip home. You will fill out the child's information from the white slip onto the bottom of the yellow paper. You will then register your name and child number by going to the volunteer opportunities page and clicking on the link or scan the QR code on your yellow paper. By December12th, make sure the gift is ready to be turned in. Make sure you have the child's requested gift and a pair of pajamas according to their size. You also may include any other items to your liking. On the gift, don't forget to tape a gift tag with the child's name and number. Also, be sure the bottom of the yellow slip is cut off and glued or tape somewhere on the gift. On or before December 13th turn in your gift to Mrs. Hetzel, Mrs. Navarette, or Mrs. Rojas. Record your donation on your digital hours form or the hard copy. 4 hours total (2 for the toy and 2 for the pajamas) If you have any conflicts please notify our sponsors ASAP!
UGLY SWEATER DANCE- Hornedo will be hosting an Ugly sweater Dance on December 9th from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. Please report to the PTA room in the Cafeteria. We already have seven members signed up we need one more! Mrs. Navarrette will let you know if more volunteers are needed.

HOURS UPDATE - The Total Community service hours needed are 15 hours minimum! Must be a non-profit organization. Forms can be found and viewed on this website. Members can document their hours on the forms tab using the link provided online or can print out the page located in the forms tab.
T-SHIRT UPDATE- Officers have came up with ideas for this years NJHS shirt! more information to come. Still deciding on more ideas and designs to get approved. Hoping to get them before winter break!
HORNEDO FEST CLEAN UP- Any members interested in helping clean up after HornedoFest are more than welcome to join! Report to the cafeteria @5:25pm. This will take about 30 minutes, but you may record an hour of service. You may bring your own gloves if you would like to. Mrs. Navarrette will not be suppling gloves for the clean up.
CENTER AGAINST FAMILY VIOLENCE- In December, members will have an opportunity to choose a gift wish from one of the children at the Center Against Family Violence. Not all members will have an option to pick a child if you do not attend the next meeting! There will not be any reserved spots to get a child since we have more members than the Center needs. The Center holds about 100 kids each year ranging in age from a newborn to a child. All gifts will include a set of pajamas. This will count for 4 hours of community service (2 hours for the toy and 2 for the pajamas). More information and sign up will be mentioned at the next meeting.
SALVATION ARMY VIRTUAL BELL RINGING SET UP- Salvation Army will all be happening online including the sign up! Each member will create their own individual links to know how much money you have raised. Every $10 in donation you will get 1 hour in community service! This sign up will go all through out mid December, then it will be time to help the Center Against Family Violence. More volunteer opportunities are offered with the salvation army! All information will be on their website. They offer opportunities all year and have different things to volunteer for! Just go online and search salvation army of el paso! You may do bell ringing in person, however you must have an adult accompanied with you over the age of 18! Call Salvation Army directly if you are interested in that. SALVATION ARMY SIGN UP CLINC- Mrs. Navarrette will be hosting a clinic next Tuesday November 8th after school in room 216 to help members sign up for the salvation army virtual bell ringing. Before that time Mrs. Navarrette will send out information to sign up on your own. If you have trouble or need help come to this clinic! All the officers will have already signed up and will be there for any help or questions you might have. Including our sponsors, Mrs. Navarrette, Mrs. Hetzel, and Mrs. Rojas.
HOLIDAY COMMUNITY SERVICE IDEAS- Any ideas for holiday volunteer opportunities will be appreciated! Make sure it is a non-profit organization. Anything you have in mind or want to share contact our officers! A opportunity might be coming up for helping the firefighters give food out for thanksgiving meals for families who are not fortunate enough to have one. Be on the look out for that! Idea was made by our president Taylor so, if you want more information don't hesitate to ask her.

Induction: We will be sending out messages with more information about induction. In the past, we have had current members be escorts to the incoming members. We will need about 20 people to help out with escorting.
Party: On Tuesday, May 3rd, 2022, we will have a party after school in the cafeteria for those who have completed their hours. If you do not complete your hours, you will not be allowed to attend the party.
Volunteer opportunities: Saturday, April 30th, there is an elementary UIL meet. About 20 volunteers are needed. More information coming soon.

Coming up: Basketball in early spring semester! About four volunteers per game, same kind of thing as volleyball, football, soccer, etc. DO NOT say you're "done" with your hours once you have 15, strive for more! Holiday season is coming up, all sorts of people need help. Church, food banks, homeless shelters, etc. Get involved in your community!
Shirt update: Awesome job turning in your money! Thank you for your patience. Shirts should be in by this week, we're going to try to get them handed out next week, we will make an announcement. THANK YOU MRS. SANGABI!
Salvation Army: Thank you to those who have set up their accounts and gotten donations. We are at about $3,500 right now. Salvation Army is counting on us, let's get that number up!
Center Against Family Violence: We have received the names of 83 children, ages infant to 18 years old. The names are on a document that Mrs. Sangabi has sent through Remind. Here's what you're going to do: Go into the link that was sent on remind (or click on the hyperlink) and put your name in the column of the child you have selected. Make sure you do not choose someone that someone else has already selected. You need to commit to buy the item they have asked for, OR SOMETHING SIMILAR, and some pajamas. You will choose a child, purchase the gift, the pajamas, wrap it, tag it with the name and number of the child, and turn it in to Mrs. Sangabi. THIS IS FOR 4 COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS. (2 for the gift and 2 for the pajamas.)

Hornedofest Clean Up - Members interested in helping with clean up after Hornedofest should report to the cafeteria at 5:30pm. Clean up will be until 6:00pm and will be recorded for one hour of community service.
Center Against Family Violence - At the next meeting, members will have the opportunity to select a name/gift wish for a child currently receiving services through Center Against Family Violence. All gifts will also include a set of pajamas. The gift and pajamas will be recorded as 4 hours of community service. Mrs. Sangabi will be coordinating this.
Salvation Army Virtual Bell Ringing - Mrs. Navarrette reported that the link and information to sign up to participate in the virtual bell ringing will be available until December 15. The team goal is $5,000. Last year, Hornedo NJHS raised $8,500. Members should use the link to set up an account and then share their page link with friends and family. For each $20 donated, 1 hour of community service will be recorded.

Website status - The current Hornedo NJHS website will be revised soon and may possibly not be available. Mrs. Navarrette will update you via Remind to let you know when the update has been completed. You may always email any of the sponsors or send a message through Remind with questions.
Remind app - All members should've signed up to receive Remind messages through the Remind app. If you have not already done this, please be sure to do it ASAP so you don't miss out. The link to sign up is here.
Volunteer hours - Each member is responsible for completing 15 community service hours by April 15. These hours may be done at Hornedo, but members are also encouraged to look for opportunities outside of school. Once an activity is completed, you may print the form from the "forms" tab. If you prefer, on that same page you will find a link to submit your hours on a digital form.
Membership dues - Mrs. Hetzel handed out the membership dues form. She has extras in her room. If you would like to print the form, it is on the "forms" tab. Membership dues must be paid directly to Mrs. Hetzel and she must fill out a receipt at that time. Dues are $25 and they pay for national and campus costs as well as an Hornedo NJHS t-shirt. Each year they are different; designed by NJHS officers. The deadline to pay dues in Oct 1st. If there is a financial hardship, please speak to any one of the sponsors and assistance will be provided.
Officer elections - elections will be held 100% online. Members interested in running for the position of president, vice-president or secretary must email Mrs. Navarrette a video no later than 11:59pm on Sept. 22. The video must be one minute or less and needs to contain your name and the position for which you are running. It should include the reason you are running for office and how you feel you can make a difference in that position. The video will be made available to members and then the membership will vote online, beginning 12:00am Sept 28 and end at 11:59pm on Sept 29. 1. Salvation Army Virtual Bell Ringing Final Recap: Congratulations to all 68 members that participated in the Salvation Army Virtual Bell Ringing! Our NJHS chapter raised $8,502, shattering the original goal of $600! Ms. Sanchez and Ms. Joanna came to announce that we were the top virtual bell ringers in El Paso and 13th in the country! 2. Center Against Family Violence Gift Drive Recap: Even in the middle of a global pandemic, Hornedo’s NJHS members were able to grant the wishes of all 75 kids at the Center Against Family Violence!
3. Community Service Hours Update: Community Service Hours are updated and posted at the bottom of the “Volunteer Hours” tab.
4. Yearbook 8th Grade Project: The instructions for 8th graders regarding the yearbook is a bit different. After choosing the photograph you want for the yearbook, answer the following prompt: “What do you look forward to later in life?” thoughtfully and thoroughly. Send your picture and response to Mrs. Rojas by Monday, February 22! Her email is aprojas@episd.org. Full instructions will be sent through Remind. This is for all 8th graders, so be sure to tell your classmates and teachers! The NJHS yearbook pictures were taken during the meeting. If you want a yearbook, be sure to order ASAP, since there are fewer in stock this year. Go to this link to order.
5. St. Jude Children’s Hospital Valentine’s Day Cards: This is a great opportunity to put a smile on the face of a patient at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital! 3. Salvation Army Virtual Bell Ringing Update: Our current team collection total is $4416, 18th place in the country! Brenda Sanchez, the Volunteer and Special Events Coordinator, and Major Estrada were special guests. If you haven’t joined the team, the directions are on the “Volunteer Opportunities” tab. The end date is December 15th. Ask questions regarding the Salvation Army Virtual Bell Ringing to Mrs. Rojas.
4. Community Service Update and Shout Outs: Shout out to Audrey Guy for completing 35 hours and Bella Jeffries for completing 33. Please send record of any activities you have completed to Mrs. Navarrette. Salvation Army, CAFV, and all other hours will be posted before the January meeting.
5. Center Against Family Violence Gift Drive: The instructions for the gift drive are on the “Volunteer Opportunities” tab as well as below. Please follow these steps in order to make this process work. Inform Mrs. Hetzel or Mrs. Navarrette of any conflicts immediately!
12/2/20: Select a child from this list and add your name next to theirs on the column to the right. Fill out this form to register your name and child number. If you do not have access to the list, try opening the list as a guest or through another device.
Before 12/14/20: Shop for the items on the slip (or something similar) and a pair of pajamas (size/gender are specified on the slip). Wrap the gift and pajamas together or separately. You may include other items. Write the child’s name and number on a gift tag and tape it to your package. The child’s number is the one on the list. Ask if you aren’t sure.
12/14/20: Drop your wrapped and tagged gift at Hornedo on this date from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Come into the back lot to the door by the library. The packages will be picked up by the Center Against Family Violence personnel at 6:00 p.m.

3. Make sure when signing up to volunteer that you are committed.
4. People who signed up for the Salvation Army Bell Ringing at Walgreens come after school tomorrow for more information in Mrs. Navarrette's classroom.
5. Make sure you are getting some hours done. Remember the minimum is fifteen hours more hours would be greatly appreciated.
6. NJHS members picked a child to give them something for Christmas. The child already asks for what he/she would want. They would also need pajamas ( their size is in the white strip along with other information).

1. The Hornedo NJHS website contains all the information you will need, to include community service hours forms, meeting minutes, volunteer opportunities, calendar of events, membership form.

3. All members are required to complete a minimum of 15 hours of community service by April 15th. It is recommended to complete 10 in the first semester. Forms may be turned in to Mrs. Navarrette at any time. They are available on the "Forms" tab on the website. In order to be considered "community service" the activity must be for a non-profit organization.
4. Membership dues are required in order to be an official member of Hornedo NJHS. These dues pay for our national organization membership and an Hornedo NJHS t-shirt that may be worn as a school uniform shirt. Dues are to be paid to Mrs. Hetzel, before or after school. The form is located on the "Forms" tab. Please see the form for more information. You may also pay your dues at the next meeting, on October 1st.
5. Hornedofest will be held on October 11th. You may volunteer for the clean-up crew. You will earn an hour of community service for approximately 30 minutes of work. A Remind message will be sent out the week before. You will not need to sign up for this event.
6. NJHS officers will be elected at the next meeting. 2. Earth Day (4/8/19) - Ms. Eveler is coordinating a clean-up day for Earth Day on Monday, 4/8/19. Please meet in the cafeteria at 3:00pm to help pick up trash around the campus. Bring gloves and sunscreen if you'd like. Bring your hours sheets too. This event is scheduled to end at 3:30pm
3. The induction ceremony for the incoming 2019-2020 8th graders will be Tuesday 5/7/19 at 6:00pm. Our year end celebration will be the same day, at 3:30pm. Current members wishing to help with the ceremony (escort, read, set-up, clean) will be needed. More info to come on that.
4. Mrs. Vaughan is needed volunteers to help with cheer tryouts. See Mrs. Navarrette if you would like to help and she will still include those hours for this year. Cheer tryouts will be held 4/30 - 5/3 from 3:30pm - 5:00pm

They may be turned in as you go or all at once, whatever you prefer. Also, if you get documentation from volunteering, you may turn that in (or a copy of it). Just be sure it includes the contact person. Please be sure that your service is performed to benefit the community, not just to save someone money (i.e. babysitting your neighbor's children is not community service.) Total hours for the year must be a minimum of 15.
Mrs. Navarrette will communicate any volunteer opportunities to you through the Remind app. Please don't assume all of your hours will come from those events. Look for them on your own as well.

9.6.16 Meeting Minutes

Meeting called to order at 2:52
1. Monthly meetings will be held the first Tuesday of every month, unless announced otherwise.
2. Community service
opportunities made known to the sponsors will be posted outside Mrs. Navarrette's room, on this website, announced or possibly emailed
it is not the responsibility of the NJHS sponsors to find volunteer opportunities
each member is required to volunteer a minimum of 15 hours before 4/15. It is recommended to complete 10 in the fall, then there would only by 5 at most for the spring semester
an opportunity to volunteer with Pennies Fur Pets is currently posted
volunteers are needed to make posters for Chick-fil-A night - see Mrs. Navarrette or Sangabi for poster board. Posters need to be turned in by Friday
turn in forms to Mrs. Navarrette anytime
forms may be downloaded and printed from the "forms" tab
3. Membership dues forms were handed out. They are also available on the forms tab. They are to be turned in to Mrs. Hetzel. Details are on the form.
4.Officer elections will be held at the next meeting. Speeches must be turned into Mrs. Navarrette by 9/27/16. The positions available are president, vice-president and secretary.
5. If you haven't already done so, please register to receive email from NJHS. There were some problems with the system during the summer, but it seems to be fixed now.
6. Next meeting 8/4/16.
