If you are one of the recipients who have planted and watched your free seedlings begin to take root and flourish, could you please email a photo, telling us the township in which that tree resides? We need to send photos of successful plantings back to the Forestry Service so they may qualify the effectiveness of their free seedling distribution.
Photos can be sent to: green.hopenj@gmail.com

One of our volunteers, Alan Midkiff, donated a 25" telescope to United Astronomy Clubs of New Jersey in 2018 and after many months of preparation, including consultations with engineers and architects, soliciting bids for the construction, and hiring a contractor, we are ready to break ground on a 16' x 16' observatory to house this JMI Newtonian reflecting telescope.
Our previous fundraising for this project more than covered these preliminary steps, but more funds are needed to see this project through to completion. A generous donor has pledged to match the next $5000 raised for the Midkiff Observatory. If we meet this goal, UACNJ will be able to cover the rest of the project with funds on hand.
You may send your donation to UACNJ at P.O. Box 150, Hope, NJ 07844 (make checks payable to UACNJ please) or donate using PayPal or a credit card at www.uacnj.org. We hope to begin construction next month, so please make your donation by April 30th to ensure that your dollars are doubled; the donor’s match ends May 1st.
All donations to UACNJ are tax deductible and all donors will receive a receipt for income tax purposes. Donors will be recognized on a plaque in the new observatory when it is complete.

The New Jersey Watershed Ambassadors Program is a community-oriented AmeriCorps program designed to raise awareness about water issues in New Jersey. Through this program, AmeriCorps members are placed at local host sites in twenty (20) Watershed Management Areas (WMAs) from Sussex to Cape May counties to serve their local communities. The program works with all sectors of society to improve the quality of New Jersey’s waterways, nurturing community-based environmental activities and empowering residents to make responsible and informed decisions regarding their watershed.
A watershed is an area of land that drains into a common body of water. In the first picture, you can see a model of a watershed. It displays a small town with houses, a factory, a forest, roads, bridges, a farm, and freshwater bodies. Once it precipitates over this land, the water will eventually flow to the water bodies, just like in our real life watersheds. We all live in a watershed; the rain that flows onto the land outside of our houses all ends up in a certain stream, river, or lake.
Our second pictures shows a polluted watershed. Watersheds can be polluted with oil and gasoline from cars, anima waste from pets and livestock, road salt, sediment/dirt, pesticides and herbicides, and litter. When there is pollution in our watershed and it starts to rain, this pollution will runoff with the rain into our waterbodies. This is called non-point source pollution because the pollution is coming from many different places, not just one. This runoff will leave our freshwater bodies polluted, harming all living things who live in the water body and depend on the water body.
We need to alter our behaviors in order to prevent our water bodies from becoming polluted with non-point source pollution. Watch the Video below for the demonstration and try to think of ways we can reduce pollution in our watershed!
