We are organising a one-day workshop on LaTeX Devanagari in Bhaskaracharya Pratisthan. All LaTeX lovers and LaTeX curious minds are invited!

(कार्यशाळेच्या मराठीतील माहितीपानाचा दुवा; इथे टिचकी मारा.)

Aim: This course will aim to

  • introduce the basic editing in LaTeX;

  • learn the use of XeLaTeX package Polyglossia not only the for the Indian scripts, but also for Indian languages;

  • discuss some present-day issues of different packages for Devanagari, and the ways to report or remove an issue.

Since most of my study is related to Marathi, the intensity of the discussion from high to low is sequenced as Marathi, Sanskrit, Hindi, other Indian languages and Nepali.

Time: 10.00---17.30 Hrs with a lunch break during 13.00---14.00 Hrs, 6 May 2017.

Venue: Bhaskaracharya Prathisthan Pune; the tentative room is Audio-Visual Hall.

Registration: Not necessary; you may directly attend the event.

Preparation:

  1. Participants should carry their computers. They should carry Internet dongles if they have one. The following installed on the machine:

  2. Once your machine is set up as above perform the follows tests:

    • Download Trial.tex below and open this in your TeX editor; "latex' it. If you don't get any error message and a pdf or div output is produced, then, at least, your basic LaTeX is installed you may proceed to the next step. If not, then ask help from Google to remove the issues or reinstall LaTeX.

    • Download and open Marathi.tex below in your TeX editor; replace the Devanagari font Mukta by a one your system has; and "xetex" or "xelatex" the document. TeX should compile this file without errors and produce a pdf or dvi output. Do not remove any % sign in the file!

    • In case of errors, firstly check that you have full or complete LaTeX installed. The confirm that you have packages Velthuis and Polyglossia installed. These are the most important packages for us. DO CONFIRM that you have these packages. If the errors still persist, ask Google for help.

  3. For advance TeX users: (i) set your input text encoding to utf8, (ii) change the entry "script=Devaganari" to "script=Devanagari" in you gloss-marathi.ldf file. The path to the file in

  4. linux distributions is "/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/tex/latex/polyglossia/gloss-marathi.ldf",

  5. OS X Sierra is "/usr/local/texlive/2016/texmf-dist/tex/latex/polyglossia/gloss-marathi.ldf", and

  6. Windows is "C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.9\tex\latex\polyglossia\gloss-marathi.ldf" (thanks to Sushant Deolekar for the Windows path!).

  7. Furthermore, you need not install full LaTeX; install packages Velthuis and Polyglossia, and confirm that you have a few more Indic font or India packages installed. Installing Polyglossia shall prompt to install XeTeX which we need.

  8. For others, do the following exercise: find the path to gloss-marathi.ldf in your system; open it as superuser; and change the entry "script=Devaganari" to "script=Devanagari". This will save us some time :)

Other instructions: as-of-now, we do not plan to offer any food, drinks, certificate or credits for the workshop.
