Donors to the Town Site

When Huntsville was determined to be the county seat, and the town laid out, four men donated twelve and a half acres each for the town. The town was laid out at a 45 degree angle as each section was a corner of the men's property with the courthouse as the center of the Old Town. The four men that donated the property were Gideon Wright, William Goggin, Henry Winburn, and Daniel Hunt. The following map is an approximate rendering of which quarters were donated by which man. It is an overlay of the 1910 map of the Old Town section of the City of Huntsville (the major streets run the same). Note, the portions were determined by looking at land patents from the Bureau of Land Management, and can be seen at the Bureau of Land Management site.
