I am a Professor of Teacher/Science Education in the Faculty of Education at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, CA.
I teach science, international, and teacher education classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels. My primary research interests are life-long teacher development, teacher education program design/reform, and preparing education students to be international teachers. Recently, I have successfully attained sanction by the International Baccalaureate Organization to offer the IB Educator Certificate in the Faculty of Education at UNB - a program that commenced in the fall of 2021.
My interest in teacher education began with my PhD from the University of Alberta focused on the student teacher relationships of beginning teachers and how they change with experience. Since this beginning, I have broadened my interests to include exploring the impact of teacher education program structures on what students are learning as they seek to become teachers and how Canadian teacher education is facilitating the transition of teachers to international teaching contexts. This includes a focus on New Brunswick, Canadian and International teacher education. This work has been potentiated by my six years as President of the Canadian Association for Teacher Education, and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council funding. I am currently refocusing my research efforts into studying our IBEC program as well.
I was an award winning physics/chemistry/biology teacher in the province of Alberta as well as at an International school in Muscat, Oman and teaching continues to be my passion as an academic. In 2013 I was awarded the University Teaching Scholar Award by the University of New Brunswick in recognition for both my teaching and my scholarship in the field of teacher education.
The graduate students I supervise are typically those interested in pursuing research into teacher education, science education or those who have a connection to international schools around the world. Methodologically, I am most practiced at using Grounded Theory and Narrative approaches to research and continue to pursue an interest in more pragmatic approaches.
