ED 5001 & 5002 Teaching and Learning Theories
This is a core course dedicated to immersing students in teaching and learning issues of direct relevance to their practica placements in schools. As such, it is intended to act as a bridge between their experiences in the schools, their course work on campus using the learning theories that unite these worlds. It includes both a lecture and tutorial component. Examples of topics include: classroom management, planning, teaching strategies, relationship building, assessment, and teaching as a profession. This course is a full year course, numbered ED 5001 in the fall semester, and ED 5002/5003 in the Winter/Spring semesters. The course culminates in asking students to create a professional portfolio as well as the creation and public presentation of a Senior Project.
ED 5050 Facilitation of Intern Practica
This course number is the course designation for the faculty facilitation of the range of practica experienced by the students during their program. This includes working with the students during their 2 week practicum in August/September, the weekly Monday presence in the schools, and the full-time practica occurring for three weeks in November/December and eight weeks in March-May.
ED 5071 Education in International Contexts
This course examines the nature of education in a range of international contexts with a particular focus on understanding how culture and world view shape education. We compare and contrast the trends and issues for teachers who teach in international contexts, with more local contexts like New Brunswick. This course is designed to provide teacher education students with a global perspective on the education profession.
ED 5505 - Teaching Science in Elementary School
This course is a practical immersion in teaching science to elementary and primary aged students. It integrates a number of site visits with the practical integration of science into the everyday lives of students. Planning will focus on how to develop inquiry-based science activities for children and how to merge these activities with the themes developed in literacy and mathematics.
ED 5511 Introduction to Science Teaching
This course is intended to give beginning teachers some of the background and confidence needed to be science teachers. Students are exposed to science curricula, issues in science education and many different instructional strategies used by successful science teachers. Students are encouraged to find a context for their thinking in the grade levels and courses taught in New Brunswick, but also to consider how teachers around the world engage with similar issues.
ED 5513 Advanced Studies in Science Education
This course explores some of the practices of successful science teaching, as well as explores some of the issues and theories underpinning the teaching of science. Students are asked to contextualize their thinking within the grade levels they intend to teach and to connect their science teaching skills through discussions and activities directed at integration. Ex’s. Unit planning, creating science teaching environments, assessment and technology plans, etc.
ED 5514 Special Topics in Science Education
This course operates as a professional seminar series - expanding on topics and issues identified in previous science education classes by the students. Topics vary from year to year, but are chosen on the basis of recent research, current issues in the students practica experiences as well as from current issues in science teaching.
ED 5960 An Investigation into Science Instruction
This course is designed to help Trinidad Elementary and Early Years teachers understand and develop effective science teaching skills. The course provides an awareness of how science, although unique, can be integrated with other disciplines taught in the school system. The techniques of discovery, questioning, analysis and synthesis will constitute the practical and applied goals of this course. Students will be encouraged to be active participants which will include role-playing, hands-on activities, lesson and project preparation and presentations. Students will use their own experiences and classrooms to excite and inspire students about science. Students will not only be introduced to the academic principles of science but more importantly, will acquire better analytical reasoning skills to pass on to their students. It will be evident that literacy and numeracy are the most essential tools in carrying out this process.
ED 6108 Selected Topics in Education Leadership: Preparation, Mentorship and Induction of Beginning Teachers
This course helps educators increase their knowledge about the challenges and issues surrounding the preparation, mentorship and induction of per-service and in-service beginning teachers. The course begins with an examination of current research on teacher education programs. Students learn about recent and current reviews of teacher preparation programs going on across Canada. The course will also help students increase their understanding of teacher induction programs and practices as presented in the research literature, as well innovative teacher induction and mentorship programs offered in New Brunswick, Canada and Internationally.
ED 6109 Education and Teaching in International Contexts
This course examines the nature of education in a range of international contexts with a particular focus on the intersection of globalization, culture and world views. Students will identify and compare issues encountered by teachers in such contexts. The course is designed for international teachers to develop a global perspective on the education profession.
ED 6902 Introduction to Research in Education
This course provides an introduction to education research in general, what researchers do, and the public nature of research. A primary goal is to have the students develop the necessary knowledge and skills to become critical readers, users and creators of research. Some topics discussed include power and research, ethics and research qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and constructing a literature review.
