The Hillsborough Bailliage of the Chaine des Rotisseurs held a Mondiale event to celebrate a lively Oktoberfest on Thursday afternoon / evening, October the 6th, 2016, festivities began at 3:30 pm sharp.
Oktoberfest has its origins in 1810 when King Ludwig I of Germany had a festival for the citizens of Munich to celebrate his marriage to Princess Therese. Ever since then, the Germans have been celebrating this 16-day event on the same meadow in Munich where the original festival was held.
Our Oktoberfest event consisted of two venues: First, a tour and tasting at the Anchor Brewery in the Potrero Hill neighborhood of San Francisco. Second, an authentic German dinner at Schroeder’s German restaurant in San Francisco’s financial district.
Anchor Brewing was started in San Francisco by German brewer, Gottlieb Brekle, during the gold rush in 1849. Fast forward to 1965 when Anchor was bought by young Stanford grad, Fritz Maytag, from the family that brought you Maytag Blue cheese and Maytag washing machines. At a time when mass produced light beer was hitting its peak of popularity, Fritz switched from selling barrels to hand crafted beer in bottles and became the pioneer that started the country’s microbrewery revolution. Anchor is located at 1705 Mariposa St.
Schroeder’s German Restaurant, our dinner venue, opened in 1893, it is the oldest German restaurant on the West Coast and an institution in San Francisco’s Financial District. This Bavarian style beer hall had a private dining area for us where we were served traditional German dishes family style accompanied by an assortment of German beers and wines. It was a grand opportunity to get our wurst and schnitzel fix! Located at 101 California Street. Prost!
