San Mateo County Courthouse History Museum in Redwood City was the perfect venue to hold the Hillsborough spring event on March 17. The Western and early California theme fit in perfectly with exhibits which members were able to view.
The San Mateo County Courthouse dates from 1910 and is on the National Registry of Historic Places.
It features a stained glass dome and mosaic floor. The San Mateo County Historical Museum moved into the Courthouse in 1998 and opened in February 1999. One can explore San Mateo County’s rich and colorful history.
The Reception was held on the second-floor rotunda beneath the stained glass lighted dome. Tasty appetizers were passed as Spottswood Sauvignon Blanc 2009 and Iron Horse Sparkling was poured. Many members, decked out in cowboy hats and boots, wandered through the various exhibits. One couple was particularly pleased to find photos of their town among the “Land of Opportunity 1880-2010 “
The appetizers and dinner were prepared by Dino Casazza who has had a successful catering business for fifteen years. Dino, known for sourcing fresh ingredients and local markets, has many devoted clients among our Chaine members.
Dino presented an excellent and tasty meal, beginning with a traditional Caesar Salad with homemade dressing and croutons topped with fresh Bay Shrimp and shaved Reggiano cheese. This was paired with Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc 1010.
Bailli Lois Gogol welcomed members and guests after we were seated in the Courtroom dating from 1910 – 1998. The room still retained a judicial appearance, including the Jury box. Tables had red and white tablecloths, keeping with the Western theme and decorated with sunflower centerpieces.
The main course was braised beef short ribs with sweet Cipollini onions and Yukon Gold mashed potatoes, along with sauté fresh vegetables. Howell Mountain Cabernet 2009 complimented this course.
Followed was a cheese course of Point Reyes Bleu, Reggiano Parmagiano and Manchego served with fresh seasonal fruit and caramelized pecans. Penfold Shirz Bin 389 2004 was an excellent match.
A delicious dessert of individual apple and blueberry crisps was served with vanilla bean ice cream.
An interesting NV Visciola was poured. Members raved about the fruity taste of this wine.
Bailli Lois Gogol thanked V. Echanson Orley Hatfield for the evening’s wine selections from our cellar.
In attendance was Bailli Provencial Hon/Bailli Hon Richard Sponholz. It had been an evening of camaraderie and fun!
