The San Francisco Italian Athletic Club in historic San Francisco North Beach was the perfect venue for the Hillsborough event on September 8th, 2012. This private club that remains a monument to the Italian community of San Francisco goes back to 1917 but has been in this location since 1936. The San Francisco Italian Athletic Club Is proud of its many athletic, cultural, and social achievements during its history.
During the Reception members mingled on the ample balcony that included an Italian-style fountain plus great views of Washington Square Park and Saint Peter & Paul Church. The panorama view was certainly one-of-a–kind! Washington Square Park is one of San Francisco’s three original parks, founded in about 1850, and refugees fled here after the 1906 earthquake. For a bit of trivia, Joe DiMaggio’s funeral was held in St. Peter & Paul’s Church in 1999.
Bailli Lois Gogol welcomed everyone while glasses of Negroni were passed. Pinot Grigio was offered to those who were not fond of the Italian drink. It is thought that Negroni was founded in Florence, Italy in 1919 by Count Camillo Negroni. Authentic Italian hors d’oeuvres were passed. This was just a taste of what was to come.
Chef Paul Alioto prepared a tasty Italian style dinner. For the salad course, bowls of octopus and salumi, Italian cold cuts, were passed “family style” to add to salad greens. The octopus was quite a hit & disappeared quickly. Antichi vinai “Petra Lava” Etna Bianco 2011 complimented this course.
The second course was a delicious seafood risotto with mussels, baby shrimp, clams and scallops. Erste é Neue Muller Thurgau Alto Adige 2011 was poured. Next course was veal piccata with sautéed Swiss chard. For the “hearty”, tripe resembling a pasta dish, was served “family style”. This seemed to disappear at some tables – mainly consumed by the true Italian members. Poggio il Castaliare Brunello di Montalcino 2006 was an excellent complement for this course.
Dessert consisted of small pastries of cream puffs and éclairs obtained from a nearby Italian bakery. Saracco Moscato d’ Asti 2011 was poured. Bailli Lois Gogol and V. Echanson Orley Hatfield thanked Chef Paul Alioto for his excellent repast.
One felt like they were in Italy – at least for a while – as this is “Little Italy”!!!
