Hickling Local History Group

Village & Parish Maps

The Group has been very fortunate to count amongst its members many talented people. One such member is Peter Brown, a retired architect with a great interest in buildings and maps, and an accomplished artist. In 2005 Peter decided to provide the village with a detailed map of the parish, showing and naming all the properties, and denoting, where appropriate, their special significance.

He also produced an inset map of the central village within the parish, naming all the houses as they were at that time. The maps were published by the History Group, accompanied by various directories, and have been much admired, purchased and hung in many Hickling homes, being artistic works in their own right.

The Directories provide substantial information relating to points of interest on the maps:

  1. Directory of properties by name

  2. Listed Buildings

  3. County Wildlife Sites

  4. Antiquities - Archaeological Finds

Having completed his Village Map Project. Peter then commenced to copy the "Inclosure Award" map of 1808. Some years ago this map was deposited in the Norfolk Record Office, in Norwich, for safe keeping and to enable this historic document to be preserved.

Originally drawn on Cow Hide, the map cannot be completely unrolled due to its age and condition. Peter, however, devised a system whereby he could copy the map in six inch (150mm) squares. Painstakingly over two years, Peter copied the map, section by section and then placing all the squares together was able to reproduce in great detail, the original 1808 map.

In 2007 an A0 size copy was donated to the N.R.O. which can now be seen there alongside the original. You can also see it here by clicking on the Link below, as you can with the Village and Parish Maps and all the directories.

Our sincere thanks to Peter for his many hundreds of hours spent on producing these wonderful documents and for permission to publish them here.
