About Me

Welcome to my classroom website. I'm a native Californian who has realized his Pacific Northwest Roots. I moved here in 1995 and I'm not looking back. I live with my wife, Brenda, and two daughters, Gracey and Lowen; all redheads. I'm a statistical outlier living with three redheads. The furry guy in the photo is our dog Cooper.

I've been teaching math for 36 years; ten years in California, middle school and high school level math, and 26 years here in Bellingham; middle school for 4 years and at Sehome for 21 going on 22 years. My education is diverse. I have a Liberal Arts degree with a Mathematics minor . I could not decide on my major for a couple of years right out of high school, so I ended up taking many classes in many different fields of study. I have a Master's degree in Technology Integration and I am a National Board Certified Math Teacher.

My teaching style is a "guide on the side" (facilitator) with assorted ventures in being the "sage on stage". Students learn by doing, so I give them enough information to provide a foundation for exploring concepts and skills on their own. I try and make my classes organized, easy going, active and challenging. I like to see students "get dirty" with doing math, so they are often working hard experiencing mathematics. I focus on developing habits of mind and having students take initiative and be a proactive learner. You can't be a spectator in life, so you might as well learn how to engage in it while in high school.

I love the outdoors and anything that keeps me active. Lately I've been overcome with the joys of rowing a single shell sculling boat. You'll find me outside of school at Lake Padden or on the trails of the interurban running, walking or biking, or out on the pitch playing adult soccer or tennis. You can reach me via email or by phone, 676-6470 ext 5222.
