STATUS OF THE
ARCHIVES BUILDING PROJECT
Almost two years ago the Presbyterian Congregation generously offered to transfer the ownership of their hall to the Archives so that we will have a permanent home for the Archives collections. We are near the end of that process and in the next two months, we expect to have the deed of transfer. With that final document in hand we will be able to apply for grant funding for renovations. We have already prepared two major grant applications which have been given a preliminary review by granting agencies with encouraging results. These will be updated and re-submitted when the deed is available. The grant process however, normally takes several months before funds are available.
Meanwhile, we are delighted to begin more detailed planning for the renovation-- a new look for the front facade, and interior design that will include office space, a conference room, a research centre, a large area for displays & public events, and workspaces for projects. A second floor will include long-term storage facilities for fragile documents and special project work.
Having space to do justice to our collections, having control over our own hours of operations and working environment will be a huge step forward for the Archives and the people who want to use its services.
While the government grants will cover structural renovation, additional fund-raising will be launched to finance other costs such as specialized shelving, display fixtures, seating, etc. This year we had the good fortune of being able to purchase several filing cabinets and a conference table at a very low price -- all of which are now stored until our own facility is ready.
We are sometimes asked "who owns the collections?" The collections belong to the people of Hemmingford who have trusted the Archives Board of Directors with their care. Our services are provided by scores of unpaid volunteers who have donated nearly a quarter century of work in preserving regional heritage.
DONATIONS
Donations are welcome to help us realize the vision of a public history center/archives. Because we are a charitable non-profit organization in good standing, donors will receive official receipts for tax purposes.
In 2015, in addition to memorial donations, the following have donated funds which have been targeted for use in our Archives building project:
*Dorothy Tobin Rohne
*Cercle des Fermiers
presented by Georgette Laberge and Lilah Holmes
*CN
at the request of Garry Bickes
*The Lion's Club
presented by Gerard and Georgette Laberge.
ORAL HISTORY PROJECT
The production of a bilingual book titled Les Voix de Hemmingford or Hemmingford Voices was the result of extended effort by many people including twenty-five local seniors who told stories about life memories which were digitally recorded. The book, printed in Sainte Anne de Bellevue, is available for purchase at the Town Hall, at the Archives and at the Catherine Plamondon Pharmacy in its new location.
The following gave their time and talent to this project: Glen Hodgins, sound; Elena Kusaka and Chantal Lafrance, transcription; Mary Ducharme, Michael Krohn, Myrna Paquette, Edmond Priest, and Beryl Tovim, interviewers; Yvon Paquette, Mary Ducharme, Myrna Paquette editors; Chantal Lafrance and Yvon Paquette, French translation; photographs, donated by families.
The book was launched at our 2015 AGM.
