Masters of the Mat
This week Shihan Hans de Jong (8th Dan) awarded two of his long time students the rank of Roku-Dan (6th).
Dean Cahill Sensei and Daniel Newcombe Sensei. After the presentation our three Shihan took the class teaching favoured techniques.
Han de Jong Self Defence School and Self Defence Central Dojo would like to congratulate them to their dedication and tuition of the art past, present and future.
A long standing affiliation comes to an end (Mar 2021)
It is with a heavy heart and much consideration and consultation that Shihan Hans de Jong, with the support of all his dan grades, has withdrawn from the AJJA. Many friendships were forged over the decades and we all hope that these can continue.
Congratulations to our newest 5th Dan (Feb 2021)
After many years of dedication to develop and refine his exceptional skills in jujutsu, Sensei Aaron Capes was awarded his 5th Dan.
Did Someone Say "Yondan"? (Oct 2018)
Yes, both Warren Holdway and Aaron Capes completed the requirements for sandan (3rd dan) and due to their efforts in support of the school and Shihan Hans de Jong, were awarded the grade of yondan (4th dan). Our club is lucky to have members with the skill, tenacity and dedication to put in the decades of effort in achieving these levels.
2 More Dan Grade Alumni (Jul 2014)
We are proud to announce that Andre Diaz and Stuart Walsh today completed shodan (1st degree black belt). The journey has exceeded 25 years of blood, sweat and tears for each these gentleman. Consider that our school began with our Shihan's father (Jan de Jong) in Perth in 1952 and in the early 1940'2 in Holland and there are still less that 30 people who have reached this remarkable level. This is a true achievement that only a very small amount of those who begin actually successfully reach this level.
Shinkendo Seminar (May 2014)
Our students were treated to a Shinkendo Seminar last weekend by the appropriately named Shihan Quick.
Shinkendo is the system of Japanese swordsmanship founded by Kaiso Toshihiro Obata to reflect a more authentic way to wield, control and effectively use a katana. Training was also held for our friends at Yoshinkan WA with a class initially planned as half Shinkendo and half Yoshinkan but the enthusiastic students weren't quite ready to put down the bokken at half time.
Shihan Howard Quick has long been a respected friend of our school and The Colosseum Martial Arts, who hosted the event at their Joondalup venue. Members with jujutsu experience ranging from 4 months to 30 years plus our Shihan, Hans de Jong attended for a well presented and enjoyable seminar and admittedly, many of the seniors found it quite befuddling being exposed to new techniques and methods of wielding the bokken (katana).
Many of us will be doing our best to retain the skills from the seminar until we can host Shihan Quick in what we hope will be the near future.
We would like to thank all those who attended in support of this event. With continued interest, support and attendance we can continue to provide these training experiences.
40 Years of Sharing Jujutsu (Oct 2013)
In October 2013, Shihan Hans de Jong celebrated the significant milestone of teaching jujutsu for 40 years. The event coincided with our Shihan being awarded 8th Dan by the Australian Ju Jutsu Association. A weekend of celebrations including a seminar, formal evening and relaxed barbecue were enjoyed by all. Many of his present students were in attendance in addition to our friends from the AJJA who travelled from the Eastern States to join us. These included Shihan John Beckman (president), Shihan Howard Quick (Shinkendo rep for Australia), the Cunningham crew and John Strauss. Shihan Brierly Bailey was with us in spirit and made a special effort to call Hans during the celebrations despite some challenges. Stuart Walsh represented Yoshinkan WA/Watanabe by presenting a gift from Shihan Watanabe congratualing Shihan de Jong on this event.
A gift for Shihan with images over the years was presented on the night with special thanks to Warren Holdway for his efforts in making it happen.
The weekend of celebrations could not have been possible or as enjoyable without the efforts of the all of the seniors of the school. Your efforts are appreciated by all in attendance.
4th Dan Awards. (Oct 2013)
3rd dan is the highest level that involves formal grading in our school. True to his nature, Shihan Hans de Jong took the opportunity of the large gathering to share the spotlight with others by
announcing 4th dan awards.
Dean Cahill faithfully fills in as the head instructor when Shihan is overseas or interstate conducting seminars. Dean was the first recipient on 4th dan on the day.
Dan Newcombe is the head instructor of The Colosseum and has put much effort into spreading the system and increasing the number of individuals training in Tsutsumi Hozan Ryu. Dan was the second to receive 4th dan on the day.
Craig Ma'har occasionally fills in as an instructor at both schools and was the final recipient of 4th dan on the day
Dean Cahill (Dec 2012)
We are pleased to announce that Dean Cahill completed sandan (3rd degree black belt) on 26 August 2012. The journey began in 1982 and Dean has been instrumental in the development and progression of the Hans de Jong Self Defence School.
Sandan is the highest level achievable by gradings. After this, dan grades are honourable awards. Dean is only the 9th person to reach this level in the history of the de Jong lineage with the school tracing back to 1940
