About Hans de Jong

Shihan Hans de Jong was born in Semerang, Indonesia, and emigrated to Perth when he was about two years old. He commenced his training in 1955, being introduced to martial arts from an early age by his father. He was among the first instructors to be graded Black-belt by his father, Shihan Jan de Jong. Sensei Hans de Jong has also obtained Dan grades in Aikido and Shotokan Karate, in addition to studying Pencak Silat, Escrima and Taekwondo.At the age of fifteen, Shihan Hans de Jong travelled to Holland to continue his education. After he left School he enlisted in the Army for two years. He returned to Australia in 1973. While in Holland he trained in Taekwondo, Shotokan Karate and Aikido for a number years.

Before going to Holland Sensei Hans de Jong had been accepted into the ‘closed-door’ training sessions for Pencak Silat. At that time you had to be at least 18yrs old and hold a green-belt in Jujutsu before you could join these sessions. They were not open to the general public, Sensei Hans de Jong was too young at that time, but wanted to learn Pencak Silat, so Shihan Jan de Jong asked the other members for their permission.

In the 1970’s Sensei Hans de Jong assisted his father in teaching the Australian Special Air-Service Regiment (SAS) when his father was the chief instructor and advisor to the regiment. This relationship resulted in the development of a close combat/hand to hand combat system to be utilized throughout the Australian Army.

Sensei Hans de Jong has been teaching martial arts, primaraly Jujutsu and Aikido, as a full-time professional instructor since 1974. He has taught and held seminars nationally throughout Australia as well as internationally, in Holland, Germany, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, England and Indonesia. Sensei Hans de Jong has also taught the Head-Injured Society, Senior citizen groups, women’s self defense, High Schools and The Academy of Performing Arts. Also more recently, he has been involved in teaching self-defense/Risk & Anger Management to the Fisheries Department – Adelaide.

In 1990 Sensei Hans de Jong was awarded a ‘Shodan-Rank Certificate’ by the Dutch branch of Shihan Hirokazu Kanazawa’s (9th Dan) Shotokan Karate International (SKI).

In October 2013 Sensei Hans de Jong was awarded the Rank of 8th Dan, by the Australian Ju-Jitsu Association (AJJA).

Sensei Hans de Jong's technical knowledge and abilities are supplemented by an encouraging, supportive, non confrontational attitude which students regularly warm to and respect.
