I was elected to the Peninsula Community Planning Board in 2021. This was an advisory panel to the City of San Diego on land use decisions in the Pt Loma area. In 2022, I chaired the Long Range Planning Subcommittee. Since 2019 I sat on the Transportation and Traffic Subcommittee, initially as a board appointed community voting member, later as an elected member, and briefly as co-chair in 2023. I resigned from the board in summer of 2023 to take a professorship out of state.

I was appointed to the board of directors of nonprofit (C3) Bike San Diego in 2020. I worked with both the advocacy and outreach teams to help make biking accessible, safe, and fun for everyone in San Diego and beyond. In 2022 I became Vice President of the board. I resigned from the board in summer of 2023 to take a professorship out of state.

From 2018-2023 I volunteered as an outreach scientist with the National Marine Mammal Foundation. From 2015-2018 I helped with events through Bay Area Scientists in Schools, and helped design curriculum for primary and secondary school students. During the pandemic I offered a few grade school scientist visits with colleagues teaching online grade school classrooms.

In general I am always down for scheming up science outreach events, public seminars, or classroom visits.
