Here we see Edward Smith, Jr. and his friend Derua Davenport on the lawn at 513 East Maple in the year 1919. When houses in Birmingham were renumbered the address was changed to 1083 East Maple. The lawn is on the Northwest corner of Maple and Adams Rd. which, in those days was merely a dirt road. You will note that they are both holding putters and near their feet are two golf balls. They are about to play a game of clock golf. This was a large lawn and my grandfather, William A. Davenport had placed one golf cup off center in the lawn. He then placed tees with house numbers around the edge of the lawn. Each tee was a different distance from the cup than any of the others. Consequently each hole had to be played in a slightly different manner. Each player would putt from each tee in a clockwise manner and the one who could hit the cup with the lowest number of strokes was the winner, just like in regular golf.
If you click on the photo to make it larger, you'll clearly see two houses on Yorkshire in the background. The one on the left was still under construction at the time the picture was snapped.
