Concepts and Structures of Elementary Mathematics I
Meets MW 1:30-3:50 pm; Oceanside room 3608
Guide-on-the-side (Instructor): Julie Harland
Feel free to call me Julie, Mrs. Harland, Ms. Harland, Ms. Julie, or Professor Harland.
Email: jharland@miracosta.edu
Office Hours: MW 1-1:30 pm online and in room 3622 on MW 3:50-4:20, or by appt. TURN PHONES OFF DURING CLASS. If your phone rings during a test or if you use your phone in any way, you must submit your test, leave the classroom, and will not be allowed to finish it.
Required Text and Materials to bring to class: Understanding Elementary Mathematics, Modules 1-9, and Material Cards. To each class, bring your paper manipulatives in baggies (cut from Material Cards), pencils, erasers, pens, calculator, highlighters, and any module due or to work on in class.
GRADING: Your grade is based on the percent of total possible points earned:
90% or more: A; 80-89.9%: B; 70-79.9%: C, 55-69.9% D; below 55%: F
1 Logic Quiz (100 pt)
5 Tests (300 pt each—each 3 times percent earned on that test)
Final Exam (500 pt—5 times percent you earn on final),
Assignments—including HW, etc. (unknown total number of points)
Service Learning (SL) Project or Alternative Assignment (200 points)
You must do reasonably well on tests and the final exam to earn a C in the course since they are worth most of points. See separate handout about SL project.
FINAL EXAM DATE: Monday, 12/12/16, 1 – 2:50 pm
NOTE: A student with a verified disability may be entitled to appropriate academic accommodations. Please see me, email me, or call me within the first two weeks of class if you need any accommodations. Contact the Disabled Students Program and Services immediately and follow their policies and deadlines to receive accommodations.
TEST INFO: Dates are announced in class, or listed on a schedule. Bring pencils, erasers, a calculator, and manipulatives to each test. A test takes up part of the period. You will also be working on new material on test days. If you need to take one early, discuss with me ahead of time. If your final exam percent is higher than your lowest test score (including a zero if you miss a test), your final exam percent will replace it.
Assignments: Written HW consists of showing work to all problems in handouts or modules. Outside of class, complete whatever you did not finish in class There may be other points earned under assignments such as participation, a Tidbit notebook, etc. Consistently review, study and work to understand the concepts. If you do not have 9-12 hours per week to devote to this class, consider taking it when you have more time. HW should be complete before you come to the next class. You must Show All Steps. Always check answers and redo a problem if you did it incorrectly. At the end of most modules are Review Exercises. Especially do the last and most important one where you make up a quiz with clear directions to each problem. On a separate page you write the full solutions. Modules must be organized with pages in order, and stapled, or bound in a FLAT folder. Do not submit in a binder. WRITE NAME IN LARGE LETTERS ON FRONT. For full credit, HW must be complete and turned in on time unless accompanied by a late HW voucher. I accept late HW up to one class after the due date for half credit unless a late HW voucher is used. To allow for emergencies, you receive two late HW vouchers. Modules must be handed to me in class, unless given to my secretary or put in drop slot or box in 3600 building before class. Your homework score is based on completion, showing work, and being turned in on time. If every problem is done with work shown, is correct, AND the module is turned in on time, you will earn the full points.
If you need help understanding something, be sure to get help before the due date and test day: work with classmates, seek help in the Math Learning Center, come to office hours, email me, look at examples, etc.
Usual Class Format and Attendance/Participation: Unless a note on the door states class is canceled, start working in your group at the start of class even if I not there. If a class is canceled, you still must complete work scheduled either independently or with students outside of class. Most of class time is spent working in groups, but there is also time for whole group questions/answers/lecture. Be on time, be prepared, participate fully, and stay for duration of class. It is disruptive to arrive late or leave early. If you miss more than one class the first 2 weeks of class, or three classes over the semester, you may be dropped without notice. Be at every class on time and participate for the entire class meeting to get the full benefits of the learning experience. You are responsible for ANY announcements made in class, and for anything covered in class. PLEASE TREAT THIS CLASS LIKE A JOB: CALL OR EMAIL ME EVERY TIME YOU ARE ABSENT AND TO INFORM ME OF ANY EMERGENCIES.
To promote an ideal learning environment, I ask students to be respectful and considerate of others in class, and to maintain a Positive Attitude. I’m happy to discuss questions about how the class is run, your grade, your philosophy, etc., OUTSIDE of class. Class time is math time. Your cooperation and understanding is appreciated. Speak with me privately if you have concerns. Refrain from talking to others while I’m talking to the whole class, even if you are helping someone. Extra noise is distracting. Arrive on time, and stay for the entire class, unless there is an emergency.
Student Learning Outcome: For a given set of problems the student will demonstrate quantitative reasoning by developing a problem-solving strategy, performing appropriate analysis and computation, and critically assessing the meaning of the conclusion or outcome.
