10/3/16 Math 30 Schedule T2 Appt and Info 10/3/16
This is a message to everyone in the class. It's up to you to read this and all emails I send. Check Announcements when you log in to MOM to make sure you did not miss any impt info. I usually put a copy of emails there. Especially pay attention to due dates.
There are 3 regular math HW assignments due this week. HW 12 is due 10/3, HW 13 is due 10/6, and Rev HW 10-13 is due 10/7.
HW T2 Appt is also due. If you haven't already done so, schedule your Test 2 appt with the APC, and then open the green Test Info folder you see when you log in and complete the HW, which is to let me know when you scheduled your appt.
Remember to follow the attendance policy of submitting HW problems in MOM every week. You should be logging in to do this at least 2-3 times per week unless you are ahead.
If you have questions, ask. I am here to help. Feel free to see me in office hours listed on the syllabus.
10/4/16
Some of you have not scheduled your Test 2 appt yet and entered the info in HW T2 appt. DO THAT TODAY! Some of you are trying to pick up your graded test and graphing packet in the MLC or APC. You need to pick it up during business hours from the secretary in the 3600 building at Oceanside or the Admin Bldg at San Elijo.
I've had a couple questions this week about late passes and so want to clear up any misconceptions. See HW and Late Pass Info. You always get full credit on all problems done before the original due date whether you use a late pass or not. All the late pass does is change the due date you see to 4 days later, and gives you an opportunity to earn half credit on problems you did not already receive credit for by the due date. Once you have full credit on a problem, you keep it!
I always give full credit on video notes even if you upload those during the late pass period.
You have plenty of late passes, and won't run out. But it's always best to complete work by the original due date so you don't fall behind.
I hope this clears up any misunderstanding. I also provided videos about how HW and Late Pass works at the beginning of the semester in case you want to review it at https://youtu.be/NE-99gtdM9o.
10/9/16 Math 30 Study Group, T2 Appt, and HW due in Mod 2.
Below is info about a Math 30 Study Group, your Test 2 Appt, and HW due in Mod 2.
There is a new forum in MOM called Student Chat Room, Study Groups, etc.
Some students want to get together for a study group, so someone will have to lead the charge and find out a good time/place to meet either regularly or once in awhile. I encourage you to go to that forum and be part of the discussion. You can also set up group tutoring appointments for through the tutoring center: Tutoring Center
I am also willing to meet with a group on a Mon after 4 pm if it ends by 5:45 pm, or perhaps some other time if a group finds that is a good time. Depending on number of students interested, I'd have to see if I could find a suitable room. Wed is also a possibility.
And everyone is always welcome to meet me in office hours as stated in the syllabus. I will not be on campus Wed, 10/12 or 11/16, but should be there on all other dates.
IF YOU HAVEN'T MADE YOUR APPT FOR TEST 2, DO IT NOW AND THEN DO THE HW ASSIGNMENT IN MOM TO GET CREDIT FOR IT. The deadline to fill out this info is Monday night, 10/10/16! You may NOT use a late pass on this HW.
Below are upcoming assignments in Mod 2. Make sure you do the handout on exponents ASAP before doing HW 14!
Handout on exponents: DO BEFORE HW 14 & 15
Make sure you watch videos for HW 14 & 15, and can do all problems on your own on the handout BEFORE doing HW 14 & 15. Solutions are provided. Test will have problems similar to those on handout.
HW 14: Laws of exponents and Simplifying expressions
Due Mon 10/10/16, 11:59 pm
HW 15: Negative exponents & Scientific Notation
Due Thu 10/13/16, 11:59 pm LatePass Allowed
Due Mon 10/17/16, 11:59 pm
Due Tue 10/18/16, 11:59 pm
Test 2 dates are 10/18-10/22.
Use the appropriate forum for any questions.
10/11/16 Note about HW, and using Math Quill and Preview when submitting answers.
1. Always do the problems on your own paper, showing all your steps. Keep your work organized, and keep all your work throughout the semester. This will be useful if you made a mistake, and have a question, and also will be useful for review.
2. Use the Math Quill to enter answers in the HW, and ALWAYS preview your answer BEFORE you hit submit so you can absolutely make sure your answer looks exactly like you want it to look. This is especially true any time you have a fraction where there are variables in the numerator or denominator. If you do not use Math Quill for a fraction, put parentheses around the numerator and another one around the denominator any time either of those is NOT a single number or single variable. For example, if an answer was had 1 in the numerator, and 16z^12 in the denominator, you would have to write 1/(16z^12) if you type in the answer without using the Math Quill.
Whether you use Math Quill or not, ALWAYS PREVIEW YOUR ANSWER. If there is a syntax error (such as entering the wrong variable or forgetting a symbol or using one incorrectly, etc.), you will be informed of that mistake, and you might notice some other problem you can correct before submitting your answer. It's way less frustrating to always use Math Quill and always use Preview before you press submit so you don't have to do a new problem for a minor mistake in entering your answer. So it's a real time-saver.
More info is at https://sites.google.com/site/harlandclass/answers
There is also a Math Quill tutorial in the yellow folder when you log in.
Hope your week is going well!
10/17/16 Math 30 Test and HW Info 10/17/16
Below are the assignments due 10/17 and 10/18. Remember to take Test 2 at your scheduled appointment time. The dates are 10/18-10/22. If you aren't sure when your appt is, log in to see your appointments. Remember that all appointments, including changes, must be arranged directly with the APC, not me.
Due Mon 10/17/16, 11:59 pm
Due Tue 10/18/16, 11:59 pm
Open Mod 3 this week. The first assignment is due next Monday.
I hope you all do great on the test! Do the Review for the Test I posted in Mod 2 if you haven't done that yet.
10/23/16
I am in the middle of grading Test 2. I will let everyone know after I've entered your score in MyOpenMath. A blank test and solutions will be posted in MOM on Tuesday, 10/25/16. It's the second item you see (light blue folder) when you log in.
I hope you have all opened Mod 3 and started HW 17. It is due Monday, 10/24, and HW 18 is due Thursday, 10/27. We are getting into difficult material, so it's especially important you keep up. You should watch/transcribe all the videos shown in each HW a few days before the assignment is due and also start working on the online assignment a few days before the due date.
If you need help, come see me during office hours, do your HW in the MLC and get help as questions arise, ask questions in the forum, or make a tutoring appt. Or work together with your classmates. There is a forum for that purpose. There are also tons of videos on factoring from other teachers on YouTube. You have a lot of resources. Use them!
10/25/16 Math 30 Test 2 Grades
I have graded all of the tests, and entered your grade. Go to your gradebook in MyOpenMath to see your grade on Test 2.
Your tests should be available to pick up by Wed, 10/26. Please pick up your graded Test 2 (and also Test 1 and your Graphing Packet) during business hours. Go to the 3600 building at Oceanside or go to the Administration building at San Elijo. Ask the secretary to give you your tests and packet. Review your test, make sure all pages were graded, points were added correctly, and that your score in MyOpenMath matches the grade on your test. If you find a discrepancy, let me know about it ASAP. IF YOU DO NOT BOTHER TO PICK UP AND REVIEW YOUR TEST, YOU MAY BE MISSING POINTS. ALSO REVIEW IT TO SEE ANY MISTAKES YOU MADE SO YOU CAN CORRECT THAT FOR THE FINAL EXAM.
Congrats to those of you who aced it.There were several perfect scores and a lot of high grades.
It's important to keep reviewing previous work so you will be ready for the final. Do old HW in review mode, practice taking the tests again, etc. Blank tests are available in MOM. See first link.
If you did not do well on this test, it is going to be difficult to pass the class as the material is more difficult in Mod 3 and beyond, and truly relies on previous knowledge from Mods 1 & 2. You'll have to go back and learn the previous material as well as keep up with the new material. This will take a lot of time. The other option is to drop if putting in more time is not an option.
10/30/16 Happy Halloween!
Assignments: HW 19 is due 10/31 and HW 20 is due 11/3.Reminder: If a HW is past due and in review mode, and you want to work on it for half credit, use a late pass if it hasn't been more than 4 days since the original due date. If you open in review mode, no work is saved.
IMPORTANT: 11/18 is the last Day to drop class with option of "W" grade.
If you haven't already done so, schedule your Test 3 appt with the APC, and then open the green Test Info folder you see when you log in and complete HW T3 Appt, which is to let me know when you scheduled your appt. The test window is 11/16-11/23. All info is in the green Test folder. It's a good idea to schedule your appt for the final exam. Appointment times for the final are filling quickly.
