8/21/16: You need to enroll in MyOpenMath by noon on 8/22/16 using your section number to show attendance. If not, you may be dropped as a no show.
If you have already logged into MyOpenMath (MOM) and completed HW 0, then you are on the right track! Have fun! If not, read the info for enrolling in MyOpenMath and Syllabus for our online Math 30 class.
Please read the syllabus and all posted info in MOM carefully. The first short, easy assignment you need to complete is in Mod 1, and is called HW 0. Do that right away. Then open HW 1. There are videos you need to watch/transcribe which I call video notes (that's the attending class part of this online class). Then complete HW 1 by its due date. Some HW problems require you to upload the first page of some of the video notes you took.
I look forward to a great semester. The KEY is to Keep Educating Yourself, and to put in the required 12 hours a week to complete all work on time. It's worth it. I know you can do it if you are devoted to passing this class. I'm here for you. If you have questions, ask!
8/22/16
Welcome to the first day of class! I hope you have all enrolled in MyOpenMath. If not, do so immediately to make sure you do not get dropped. I have many students asking to add the class.
Please watch this video about how the class and MyOpenMath works: https://youtu.be/QSn2HfNtlDU
8/24/16
HW 0 was due Tuesday. Note that there are only 15 questions. The first question is worth 8 points, because I ask you to write 8 things in the answer box. Anything like that is not automatically graded, so you won't see credit for it for awhile. So you should see 14 points if you did problems 2-15 correctly. I have graded some of #1, so some of you have full credit on #1 already. Some of you put your answers to #1 in the forum (so didn't quite follow the directions--there is a box to put your answer right in the HW itself), but I removed those, because everyone in the class can see the forums, and I didn't want to have your private info there. If you did not finish HW 0, click on Redeem a Late Pass. This gives you a few more days to complete it.
There is some confusion about the assigned videos and video notes. I assign you to watch the videos I list when you open each HW assignment. You should watch and transcribe these notes just as if you were coming to class. Mainly, these notes are for yourself to keep organized and used if you need help on the HW problems. I don't have you turn in these notes, and I only have you upload the first page of a few video notes each week in the HW assignment. So for HW 1, which is due today, Wed 8/24, problem #1 is to upload the first page of 1V6, and problem #2 is to upload the first page of 1V8. So even though in your own notes, you should have transcribed 11 videos, which may be 20 pages or so depending on your handwriting, you only upload the first page of what you wrote for 1V6 and for 1V8. I hope this clarifies it.
Also, if you do not finish all of any HW assignment by the due date, click on Redeem Late Pass, which gives you a new due date 4 days past the original due date. After HW 0-6, any problem done during the Late Pass period will only earn half credit. Read all info on Late Passes.
If you have questions, remember: I'm here for you!
8/24/16: Note sent to students enrolled in MOM who did not complete HW 0 by due date:
As of today, 10 am on 8/24, your Math 30 HW 0 assignment was not completed. It was due yesterday. Log in to MyOpenMath, open Mod 1, and you'll see HW 0. Note it states it is in review mode. That means the due date passed. Click on Use Late Pass, redeem it, and do HW 0. HW 1 is due tonight (Wed 8/24) so you'll also need to use a Late Pass for HW 1 if you do not finish it by tonight.
8/24/16: There is still some confusion about HW. Please read all the info about how HW is graded, Late Passes, etc., especially the info below. I have to hand grade your video note uploads, so it will show as incorrect with zero points until I have time to grade those. That often takes a week after the due date.
If you do a HW problem that has to be hand-graded by me (such as a problem where you enter information such as your phone number, or if you are asked to upload something like the first page of video notes), you will see an x by the problem and a score of zero until I grade it by hand. It might be a week or more until you see credit for that kind of problem. When you submit a HW problem like that, you will see this note:
Note: This question contains parts that can not be auto-graded. Those parts will count as a score of 0 until they are graded by your instructor.
So you will not see credit for the video uploads in HW 1, HW 2, etc. until about a week after the due date since I have to grade those individually by hand. It's impossible for me to grade the minute you submit it and I wait until everyone has done the HW to start grading so I can grade everyone's (even those who used a late pass) all at once.
NOTE: If you submitted an answer or uploaded something, and see the above note, you should still be able to see your answer. If you want to look at it later before it's in review mode, go to the HW assignment, click on it, and then the problem number. You should be able to see what you answered or uploaded, or you might have to click on Reattempt problem first. At that point, you can change what your wrote or uploaded, and resubmit, or simply look at what you already did.
To see your answers and credit earned once in review mode (which means you cannot open it to do any more problems unless you use a late pass--so don't open in review mode until you are sure you are done), go to your gradebook, and click on the score earned to open the assignment. You will then see the answers you entered and your score on each problem. Click Show Answer to see the correct answer to any problem.
8/25/16 Email to Students who did not complete HW 0
As of today, 9:30 am on 8/25, your Math 30 HW 0 assignment is still not completed. It was due Tuesday, and it is how you show your first day of attendance in this online class. Log in to MyOpenMath, open Mod 1, and you'll see HW 0. If it states it is in review mode, click on Use Late Pass, redeem it, and do all 15 problems of HW 0. Keep in mind when you do problem 1, it will show up as incorrect and zero points for awhile until I have time to grade those by hand. But you should earn 14 points on all the other problems right away.

Please watch this short video about HW, Late Passes, Review Mode, etc: https://youtu.be/NE-99gtdM9o
HW 4-6 is due this week. Make sure you pay attention to the due dates/times. Use a late pass if you don't finish all the problems on time.
This week, purchase or print the PDF of the Graphing Packet as you'll start working in it by the end of this week. Click first link in Mod 1 for info. The schedule for the Graphing Packet is in the first link in Mod 1. Follow the timeline to keep on track.
Reminder: When you upload video notes in your HW, it will show up as no points until I grade it by hand. See my announcement on 8/24/16.
Don't wait until the due date to start HW. If so, I may not be able to help you before the due date. I will be out of touch starting early Thursday afternoon, 9/1, and will be back after the Labor Day holiday. If you have questions, contact me by noon on Thursday.
I sent the above email to everyone in the class. Almost every email I send is to everyone in the class as a general announcement to keep everyone on track and informed.
I just wanted to clarify I don't want you to assume from any email sent by me that I'm implying anything about your work unless I specifically mention something personal about your work such as I noticed you did not finish a particular assignment, etc.
The reason most emails are addressed with your first and last name is so if you reply to the message I know who it is from.
That said, feel free to ask questions! I'm here!

Some students are still opening HW after the due date while HW is in review mode, and working problems. If you do that, nothing you do will count or be saved or submitted. I went over this in this video: https://youtu.be/NE-99gtdM9o . You must click on USE LATE PASS and redeem it so the due date changes to a later date in order for you to work on problems and get credit. Please carefully read all the info about how HW is graded, Late Passes, etc. You have plenty of late passes. You must redeem a late pass within 4 days of the due date in order to use it and continue working on HW. For instance, if you did not use a late pass for HW 1, this is what you see for HW 1 when you open Mod 1:
HW 1: One and Two Step Equations
Past Due Date of Wed 8/24/16, 11:59 pm. Showing as Review. until Fri 12/16/16, 11:59 pm
This assessment is in review mode - no scores will be saved
Note that it states the it is past due, in review mode, and no scores will be saved. If you click on it, it also state this in the upper right corner: In Review Mode - no scores will be saved
On the other hand, if you did not yet use a late pass for HW 3 and open Mod 1, you'll note the due date has passed but there is an option to click on Use Late Pass (unless you already opened it in Review Mode) because 4 days hasn't passed yet. I suggest you click on Use Late Pass for HW 2, 3, or 4 TODAY if you need more time to complete ANY of these. You may use 2 late passes on each of these homework assignments. The first late pass extends the due date 4 days. The second extends it 4 more days.
Keep working. There is no rest for the weary in this class, but I am confident that if you put in the time, you will be on your way to success. Learning to do algebra well is like learning any other skill like riding a bike...the more you practice, the better you will get at it! You CAN DO IT!
I love this video about learning math. Enjoy it: http://mathematigal.com/home/2013/10/21/a-math-major-talks-about-fear

There is important info here. Please read all of it!
I have graded the first set of video notes, which was problem #1 in HW 1 where you upload 1V6. Most of you took awesome, beautiful, well-organized notes. Keep in mind the following: 1) Write your name and the video label at top of page. 2) Copy the contents of the video in your own hand-writing. 3) You only need to upload the FIRST page of the notes...whatever fits on the first page. It should usually be a full page. Some of you uploaded the second page, or typed it, or sent me a movie, or sent html (which did not work), etc. Jpeg or PDF is best. If you uploaded notes for #1 in HW 1, please check to see if you got credit for it. If not, try again, or contact me if you think there is a problem. I might have missed yours. I also gave everyone credit who completed #1 of HW 0. If you did it and do not see credit for it, let me know.
I have changed the due date for HW 0-4 to Wed, 8/31/16, same as the due date for HW 5. I did this in case any of you accidentally opened up HW in review mode instead of using a late pass if you needed to do more problems. This gives everyone one last chance to still upload video notes, or do more problems for HW 0-4. Keep in mind all of those are really PAST DUE. But I am allowing you to go back and work on it for more credit. You might still be able to use a late pass on some of these if you don't finish by 8/31. Do your best to have all of HW 0-5 completed by then.
Everyone should be working on HW daily unless you are ahead. Submitting work on time is how you show attendance. I will be dropping students this Thursday who do not submit HW this week, so if you haven't yet logged in and completed some work, do that right away. It's very hard to catch up once you fall behind. So JUST DO IT!
This Friday, 9/2, is the last day you may drop the class in SURF and get a refund with no grade placed on your permanent record. If you decide to do that, make sure you take care of that early in the day in case you run into trouble. The internet or SURF could be acting up, etc.
Remember to get the Graphing Packet by Friday as you need to start working on it the end of this week. See Mod 1.
I'm here if you have questions. Please use the forum to post any math questions or general questions about the class, and use email or messages for personal questions. Looking through all your video notes first before asking questions may help you find your answer sooner. Keep those organized so you can reference as needed.
Have fun!
