Guide-on-the-side (Instructor): Julie Harland
Email: mccmathgal@gmail.com
Office Hours: T/Th 1:30-2:30 pm in 3622; and by appointment. I welcome you to call me, email me, set up Computer Zoom meetings for other times, and can help you after class as well. Each time you email or call, sign your email with your first AND last name, write that you are in Math 106, and provide a phone number with times you may be reached. TURN PHONES OFF (or put in silence mode) AND PUT AWAY DURING CLASS. If your phone rings during a test or if you use your phone in any way, you must submit your test, leave the classroom, and will not be allowed to continue and finish it.
Required Text and Materials to bring to class: Understanding Elementary Mathematics, Part 2. You may click the link to print or view the packets online, or you may purchase it as one spiral bound packet at extremely low cost in the bookstore. To each class, bring anything required for the section (mira, ruler, protractor, compass), pencils, erasers, pens, calculator, highlighters.
GRADING: Your grade is based out of how many points you earn out of a possible 2500 points as stated below, assigned as follows:
2250 or more: A 2000-2249: B 1750-1999: C 1500-1749: D Below 1500: F
1800 pt (72%): Tests, including Final Exam (18 times average percent of all tests after lowest score dropped)
400 pt (16%): Homework Checks (4 times percent on HW checks) ; usually at beginning of class; no early or late HW checks
100 pt (4%): Self Quizzes (percent earned on self-quizzes or other work done in class and submitted during tests)
100 pt (4%): Unannounced Quizzes/Presentations/Other (percent earned on pop quizzes, presentations, or other work/assignments--may not be taken early or late)
100 pt (4%): Service Learning (If unable to complete, score may be replaced with percent earned on pop quizzes)
Note: You must do reasonably well on tests to earn a C in the course. Click here for info about SL project.
NOTE: A student with a verified disability may be entitled to appropriate academic accommodations. Please see me, email me, or call me within the first two weeks of class if you need any accommodations. Contact the Disabled Students Program and Services immediately and follow their policies and deadlines to receive accommodations.
TEST INFO: Test Dates announced in class. Bring pencils, erasers, geometry tools, and a calculator (phones not allowed) to each test. Each test usually takes up only part of the period. You may also be working on other material on a test day. If you need to take a test early, discuss at least a week ahead of time, and if possible, I may be able to accommodate you--no guarantee it will be ready to take early. Tests may not be taken late. Your lowest test score is dropped. If you miss a test, that zero score will be the one that is dropped, and no other test score (including final) may be dropped.
Homework Checks, Self-Quizzes, and Pop Quizzes: Written HW consists of showing work to all problems in workbook assigned since last class. Between classes, complete the work started in class. To study, do every problem on your own paper a second time before the next class to solidify your understanding. Consistently review and study new and previous work to own the concepts. If you do not have at least 9-12 hours every week to devote to this class (5 hours in class, and at least 2-3 hours between each class), consider taking it when you have more time. Every problem should be complete in your workbook before the next class, with steps and all work shown. At the beginning of most classes, there will be a random homework check. You must be in class with your workbook out and ready to be checked to earn credit. ALL of the HW should be done as I only check random pages or problems, and your score is based on that. There may also be a pop quiz on any material covered so far in the class, and these may be done any time during a class period. I do not state during class whether there will be one or not, and these may not be taken early or late. You must be in class AT the time I check HW or give a quiz to get credit for either of those. You will also need to keep a notebook of Self-Quizzes (you'll need to get any ones you missed from a classmate) and other relevant work I specify to include in a notebook. These are collected on the day of a test, and need to be neat, in order, with problems written out, and correct work shown. Do a correction sheet for any missed problems from a Self-Quiz. If you miss being there for a Self-Quiz, you will need to get the info from a student in the class. Every student will also have to make a short presentation about their service learning experience, or another topic, and this will be part of the Pop Quiz grade.
If you need help understanding something, be sure to get help before the due date and test day. Work with classmates, seek help in the Math Learning Center, come to office hours, email me, look at examples, watch videos, ask questions in class, etc.
Usual Class Format and Attendance/Participation: If a class is canceled for any reason, complete alone or with others the work scheduled for that class before the next class meeting. Most of the class time is spent working on the problems in the workbook in small or large groups. Be on time, prepared, participate fully, and stay for the full class session. Help others if you are ahead. Arriving late or leaving early is disruptive. If you miss a class the first 2 weeks, or miss 3 classes throughout the semester, you may be dropped without notice unless you contact me immediately. You are responsible for ANY announcements made in class, and for anything covered in class. Don't ask if you missed anything if you miss class. Of course, you missed everything that was done while you were not there. PLEASE TREAT THIS CLASS LIKE A JOB: EMAIL ME EVERY TIME YOU ARE ABSENT TO LET ME KNOW YOU ARE CONTINUING IN THE CLASS, AND INFORM ME IF ANY EMERGENCIES ARISE.
To promote an ideal learning environment, please be respectful and considerate of others in class, and maintain a positive Attitude. I’m happy to discuss questions about how the class is run, your grade, your philosophy, etc., OUTSIDE of class. Class time is math time. Your cooperation and understanding is appreciated. Speak with me privately if you have comments. Refrain from talking to others while I’m talking to the whole class, even if you are helping someone. Extra noise is distracting. Arrive on time, and stay for the entire class, unless there is an emergency.
Student Learning Outcome: For a given set of problems the student will demonstrate quantitative reasoning by developing a problem-solving strategy, performing appropriate analysis and computation, and critically assessing the meaning of the conclusion or outcome.
