Service Learning (SL) Project Spring 2019 Due 5/9/19 Instructor: Julie Harland
Option 1: Make at least 5 separate visits to an approved site as a volunteer where you observe/participate/interact with children for at least an hour each time when they are involved with math. Ideally, this would be in an elementary school setting during school. The school where you serve must be on the approved list (or approved by the instructor), and must be non-profit. You must complete your service learning as volunteer work, so you may NOT be paid. I highly recommend you complete 15 hours at one school as that will earn you a Service Learning Certificate. After each visit, make a personal journal entry consisting of 1-2 paragraphs. State the date/time, a specific activity or interaction, what you learned, how you might relate it to what you are learning in class, and include any observations and impressions. You do not need to type it. At the end of your service, write a professional, typed reflection paper that is at least two pages. Include your name and class on a cover page, and give your reflection paper a title. Take it to the writing center for feedback and revise, if necessary. Read all of the info from the Service Learning Center.
· Make contact with a school and find placement. Contact them via telephone or email. Explain that you are participating in Service Learning through MiraCosta College. Be clear about how many hours you will be committing, including times and days you are available. Emphasize that this is service learning and that you must be engaged in an activity (e.g., working directly with the children. Take your syllabus, this sheet, and the Service Learning Packet with you to your first visit. Most schools require a TB test. This is free through MiraCosta Health Services if you explain that you need the test for your service learning assignment.
· After you find placement, have the SL Agreement Form signed by the school personnel. Make sure it is completely filled out with all information required, including signatures. Submit it to me.
· Do your Service Learning. Treat your service learning like a job: be on time and stay for the entire scheduled time, act appropriately, and be sure to contact your supervisor if an emergency prevents you from keeping your commitment. Remember that the children and the teacher are counting on you! Always bring your time sheet and have it signed by the supervising teacher. It will be your responsibility to get this form signed for each day you do your service learning. Enter a journal entry after each visit.
Submit all of the following by 5/9/18:
· Personal journal with a separate entry for each visit. Each should be written after the visit to the classroom, and be a couple of hand-written paragraphs, although if you want to type it up, that’s fine. You can simply staple pages together when you submit this.
· *Time Sheet signed by your supervisor
· Student Evaluation: When you complete all your hours, give this form to the teacher you worked with, and have them give the form back to you. This will provide you with some feedback that may be useful for your career. Make a copy to use as a tool for your professional or academic portfolio. It needs to be signed by your supervisor.
· Program Evaluation: After completing your service learning assignment, you’ll complete this form to provide the service learning office your feedback about your service learning experience.
· *Reflection Paper: This paper is an in-depth reflection (1-2 typed pages) of the overall service learning experience. In your reflection paper focus on personal development, academic connections of the experience to our course content, and any ideas, impressions, insights you’d like to share. You can see examples of reflection papers that have been published in MiraCosta’s Reflections books online at http://www.miracosta.edu/studentservices/servicelearning/reflections.html
· *The SL agreement form, timesheet, and reflection paper is required to earn any credit. Points will be deducted for other missing items.
Option 2: Participate in the Stream Festival on 4/13/19 at MiraCosta. All details are on the Service Learning site at http://www.miracosta.edu/studentservices/servicelearning/stream.html
Keep a journal of times you met to prepare, stating what you did to prepare. You also must submit a paper (1-2 typed pages) about your experience participating in the Festival. Include info about your project, your impressions of how it went, and anything you learned from it.
