THIS SYLLABUS IS NOT OFFICIAL UNTIL THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS.
I DO NOT USE BLACKBOARD. Read all info below and follow directions for enrolling in the free MyOpenMath online system in order to submit HW.
You are required to READ everything I post in the syllabus, and are responsible for any announcements made in class, or emails sent to you. If you have questions, ask me.
This syllabus is tentative and not official until the first day of class, 8/24/15.
STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO ENROLL IN MYOPENMATH.COM (FREE and we call it MOM for short) AND COMPLETE THE FIRST ONLINE HW ASSIGNMENT BY THE SECOND DAY OF CLASS. Follow directions below.
1. If you do not already have an account with MOM, go to www.myopenmath.com and create an account. For your last name, ENTER the SAME LAST NAME that is on SURF, or you'll be dropped from MOM. For your first name, enter the first name you prefer to be called.
The Tentative Schedule is at bottom.
Professor: Julie Harland; 760-757-2121 ext 6387; email: jharland@miracosta.edu
Tentative Office Hours: T/Th 3:15 pm - 3:45 pm in room SAN 304 & T/Th online 3:45-4:15 pm and by appointment.
Each time you email or call, make sure to state your first and last name, which class you are in, and a phone number with times you may be reached.
Course Description Intermediate Algebra: This algebra course covers radicals, exponents, concepts of relations and functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, linear and quadratic functions, and the solutions of equations from these topics.
Calculator: You will need a scientific calculator for this class. The calculator should have buttons for square roots, exponents, and parentheses. Calculators may be used on tests, but most homework should be done without a calculator. Only use a calculator when necessary. I recommend TI-30-XS (for about $20). Use of cell phones as calculators will not be allowed.
Attendance: Attendance is required. If you miss a class the first two weeks of class, you may be dropped. It is important to come to all classes. If you miss two classes in a row or have excessive absences (4 or more), you may be dropped. If you miss a test, contact me immediately or you may be dropped.
TESTS: There are 3 regular tests and a Final Exam. Tentative test dates are 9/17, 10/15, and 11/19. The final exam is on Tuesday, 12/15 from 1-2:50 pm. NOTE THIS STARTS EARLIER than our regular class meeting time. Most problems from the test are similar to those done on the YourMathGal videos I assign, in the packets I wrote, and in the online HW.
Packets, YourMathGal (YMG) YouTube videos, and Online HW: There are four packets written by me that you may purchase in the bookstore. These are the only purchases for this class. In each packet are links to videos I produced. Since I cover a lot in class, you may not need to watch all the videos, but doing so will help you. There are a few you must watch. Do all the problems in the packet. There is space for you to show all work. Start working on each packet a week before the first HW associated with that packet is due. The online HW is in a link in MyOpenMath. Make sure you can do all the problems on the videos on your own. Many problems (marked by an asterisk) in each packet are done on a video. After you do the assigned pages in the packet, do the online HW. Start working on the online HW problems a few days before each assignment is due. If you do not complete all online HW problems by its original due date and need more time to complete an online HW assignment, you may redeem a late pass. Read Late Pass Info. You need to do the packet to learn the material, but you do not turn it in for points.
Studying: Completing your homework is not the same thing as studying. Most students need to review a concept or a procedure many times before it becomes familiar and sticks. Schedule at least 12 hours a week (2-3 hours a day) for working on this class. You may need more time. I encourage you to frequently go back and review older videos, problems in the packets, and online HW problems to make sure you still remember the concepts and can work through the problems correctly.
Grading: A point earned in one category is not worth the same as a point earned in another category. 1500 points total. Complete the assignments ON TIME, study regularly, and be well prepared before taking a test. HW is required and your grade will be lowered if you do not complete it, but it is a small percentage of your overall grade. Doing well on HW is not enough to pass the course. You will also need to pass most of the tests and do reasonably well on the final exam.
Online HW: 200 (Points represent 2 times the percent earned on all online HW from the semester.)
Tests: 900 (3 tests, each worth 300 points--3 times percent earned on each test.)
Final Exam: 400 (4 times percent earned on final exam)
Grades are calculated using the following scale (90%-A, 80%-B, 65%-C, 50%-D). The minimum points you need to earn that grade is shown. You must do well on and tests (especially the final exam) to pass the class. HW helps a little, but your grade is based mainly on your ability to recall and be able to work problems correctly showing all steps and work in a testing environment.
A: 1350 B: 1200 C: 975 D: 750
