Symbolism of the Club Emblem
As you examine our emblem do so from the center out, and you will fully appreciate its significance.
The Circle: represents the Sun. It returns us to preChristian Ireland. It was worshipped as a symbol of the unknown strength that rejuvenated the earth.
The Latin Cross: In the mission to the pagans, St. Patrick brought the Latin Cross to
Ireland. It stood as a challenge to the superstitions of the Druids. The message to the pagans was “Redemption and Resurrection to life eternal through rebirth in Christ”. Patrick, it is said, superimposed the Cross in front of the sun creating the Cross.
The Celtic Cross: exemplifies the great evidence of Faith. It remains standing in every Irish town and throughout the countryside since Patrick’s time.
The Shamrock: was used by Patrick to explain the Trinity. Today it is also synonymous with Ireland and the Irish people.
The Torch and Hand: From the Statue of Liberty we have this symbol. It brings us across the broad Atlantic to this great land where millions of emigrants from Ireland, and the world, have sought and are still seeking freedom and opportunity.
The Outer Circle: The outer circle represents the family we the members of the Greenwood Lake Gaelic Cultural Society strive to be. It also proclaims that many member families come together as one and do so in the name found in the circle and that our Society’s home is in Greenwood Lake.
When you wear our proud symbol, be you Irish or not, you exhibit your commitment for GOD and COUNTRY.
