Who we areWe are a large Girl Scout Troop in Mar Vista, CA. We are part of the Marina Service Unit of Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles. In total we have around 150 registered members, 15 Adult Leaders and an Executive Committee made up of parents and other interested adults.
History of our Troop
Our Troop originally started as a Brownie Troop with our troop's first Leader, Sylvia, who wanted to bring Girl Scouts to her daughter and her friends. She formed Troop 92 out of Beethoven Elementary in Mar Vista, CA in 2004. At our humble beginning there were only a small handful of girls. When it became time to bridge up the majority of her girls to Juniors, Sylvia wanted to be sure that her remaining Brownies were given the chance to continue their Brownie path and she shared her love of being a Girl Scout Leader with Jennifer who had a daughter at the right age to be a Brownie and could lead her younger ones to Juniors. In 2005 Jennifer took those Brownies and added a couple more to offer the girls a solid group of friends to grow with. Gloria was close friends with Sylvia and Jennifer and wanted her daughter to be able to enjoy Girl Scouts. In 2006, she started a group of 2nd Grade Brownies with the help of Sylvia's co-leader who had a daughter that wanted to be a Girl Scout as well. This allowed more girls from Beethoven to enjoy Girl Scouts as well. As membership grew, so did our leadership group. Sisters of the existing girls continued to want to be Girl Scouts too! Michelle and Robin took up the charge of the younger girls in 2007 and led them in a separate meeting space as the first Daisies for Troop 92.
When Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles was formed by merging several smaller councils together, the troops all were re-numbered based on their location. Troop 92 became Troop 925. As interest in Girl Scouting at Beethoven continued to grow, so did our troop. Jeanna offered to lead another group of emerging Daisies in 2008. This brought our troop to 4 levels meeting both together for activities and independently for age specific tasks. Patti, one of Gloria's Co-leaders wanted to share the opportunity with her youngest daughter and so in 2009 a fifth generation of Troop 925 was born. At this point our troop had grown to be a presence in Mar Vista. We were well known for offering school support to Beethoven Elementary and community service to the surrounding areas.
As Sylvia and her girls grew, they moved on to Mark Twain Middle School and we faced a hurdle. No longer did most of the girls all attend the same school. Sure we faced some girls moving away and some to new schools but the bonds of the Girl Scout Sisterhood kept our group membership in tact and the girls continued to meet regularly. Now we had to decided to split the group or remain one strong Troop. In the end, all were in favor of allowing the Troop to continue to grow and keeping ourselves Troop 925, the Super-Troop as we lovingly are referred to. With the new school in mind, and girls having moved around we offered some other girls in the neighborhood the opportunity to come and join us, we were no longer referred to as just girls from Beethoven Elementary!
With this decision came the 2010 Daisies, Julie's group of girls which was formed as a pot-luck of schools coming together. Our leadership team sat down and evaluated our membership, we were 88 strong! The leaders all voted at that time that as the youngest of leader's daughters became of age to start Daisies, we would stop the troop's growth. Which allowed us just 2 more years of new Daisies to start. Wen-Chia took on the next group in 2011. With her new girls and the addition of other girls in the neighborhood who wanted to be Girl Scouts, our troop had grown to over 100 girls! Finally in August of 2012, our last and youngest group of Daisies was started by Julie.
As the troop grew, so did our diverse activity sets. The girls began to develop different focuses in the different age groups. Our troop is the proud parent troop of not only one, not two but three splinter troops!
Today we have a total membership of around 115 people. New leaders and ones that have been around since the near beginning along with girls from all over the area call Troop 925 home.
