The 2011 Camp

The St. George's Archaeology Camp was a pilot summer program in Grenada, West Indies designed by Jonathan Hanna, Peace Corps Volunteer/archaeologist, in partnership with the Grenada National Trust. It ran for four weeks, from July 11th through August 4th, 2011, Monday-Friday (8am-12pm). Twelve 5th, 6th, and Form 1 students from the St. George's Methodist School, Anglican Senior School, and St. Dominic's RC participated.

Students learned about archaeology, scientific method, and the history of Grenada. We had a scavenger hunt at the National Museum, toured archaeological sites around Grenada, and excavated in three areas of Queens Park. The later excavations proved that the area was well populated by Saladoid-era Amerindians (aka pre-Arawak) in prehistory. Because of flooding in the 4th week, the excavations were forced into abeyance until the summer of 2012.
