HISTORY
“Feed My Sheep” is the mission given to us by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. “Feed My Sheep” is the continuing Christian responsibility entered into by His followers. “Feed My Sheep” reflects the purpose of the Greenwood Soup Kitchen Ministry.
Representatives from Greenwood area churches first met during May 1987, to hear about the Soup Kitchen Ministry in Greenville, S.C., and to learn how to organize and run a similar kitchen in Greenwood. By September, 1987, plans were developed, volunteers were organized, the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection made kitchen and dining facilities available, and the doors to the Greenwood Soup Kitchen opened for the first time. Our Soup Kitchen has operated, continuously, ever since. Initially, area churches agreed to take responsibility for different days, but since that humble beginning, people from many other churches and organizations have volunteered their time. Today, this ministry has become a truly ecumenical experience for the entire Greenwood community.
In 2001, after more than 13 years in its original location, the Soup Kitchen moved. The First Presbyterian Church of Greenwood purchased the former Turner House Senior Center on Bailey Circle and, as part of their outreach ministry, offered those facilities to our Soup Kitchen and to other community service agencies.
In February of 2009, through the outstanding efforts of Dr. Jack Parham, and the generosity of many in our Greenwood community, our Soup Kitchen now has a permanent home. We are located at 929 Phoenix Street, formerly the Blake School and Burton Center. The building is now known as The United Center for Community Care - UCCC. We are blessed with a larger, better equipped facility that will serve approximately 100 guests at one seating.
