Welcome to Restaurant Battle: The SPONCH CaFe Edition!
All of the life forms we can think of - trees, whales, mold, bacteria, people - are mostly made up of 9 miniscule particles that originally came from ancient stars. These particles are called atoms, and each type of atom is called an element. Each of them has been on the planet for over 4 billion years (except for a little comet dust or meteors). These tiny bits of elements combine and recombine as they get (re)cycled through different living and non-living things. For this Chef's Challenge, you will open up your basket to reveal one of 9 mystery elements: Magnesium, Sulfur, Phosphorus, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Carbon, Hydrogen, Calcium or Iron (Fe). While there are around 100 naturally occurring elements on Earth, these 9 elements in different combinations actually make up 97% of all living things!
Your challenge is to design a food dish for Maggie's SPONCH CaFe menu that features your element. In order to design the dish, you'll need to become an expert on your element, such as where it's found, what it does in living things and how it cycles from one to another. (HINT: Use the websites below).
Once you have gained expertise in your ingredient, design a creative meal in which that element is the star. Your meal could be a breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert. You will want to design both a visual representation of your meal and give it a name, brief description and price. Finally, your job will be to present your meal to a sample of Maggie's SPONCH CaFe customers to convince them why they should order your element. Good luck!
