Locally, the McHenry County, Lake County and DuPage Genealogical societies hold conferences and CAGGNI holds GeneaQuest every other year.

For those just starting out, a good place to go is the Family Search learning center: https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Classes_in_the_Learning_Center, which offers basic and more advanced webinars on all kinds of genealogy.

The National Genealogical Society offers a variety of courses – they also have useful checklists to help you build on the knowledge you have so far: https://www.ngsgenealogy.org/getting-started/

For longer-term study, there is the National Institute for Genealogical Studies (https://www.genealogicalstudies.com/) – you can take individual courses, or pursue a “package” in a specific specialty – they have one aimed at librarians – that will result in a certificate for that specialty (not to be confused with becoming a Certified Genealogist).

Boston University (https://genealogyonline.bu.edu/) offers two courses in genealogical research – if you’re new to genealogy, take the basic course first; the 15-week professional learning certificate course (also not to be confused with becoming a Certified Genealogist) is quite advanced and very time consuming. It is very challenging.

Strathclyde University in Scotland offers everything from short courses to an actual master’s degree in genealogical studies. https://www.strath.ac.uk/studywithus/centreforlifelonglearning/genealogy/

Pharos Tutors (out of the UK): https://www.pharostutors.com/ - again, different levels of study are offered.

All of these can now be done on line. There are many others, too, which you can find at the Cyndi’s list website: https://www.cyndislist.com/education/ Look especially under “Online Courses and Webinars” as well as “Institutes, Campuses & Universities.”
