Great Glen Post Office

Great Glen Post Office

This picture of the old post office, situated on School Street (now Main Street and a private residence), was occupied in 1901 by George Harrison, who was appointed postmaster in June 1899, and his wife Julia. In November 1902 Mrs Rachel Campton was appointed postmistress and became the new occupant. She was to hold this post for over twenty years.

The first official postmaster in the village was William Clements, whose appointment was confirmed in August 1839. Following his death his widow, Sarah, was appointed postmistress in February 1841, and she was succeeded in October 1856 by George Elson, a carpenter. Members of the Elson family then ran the post office for about forty years, in various locations around the village; Post Office Row is so called because the end house was once the post office. Records suggest it has also been located in Stretton Road, St Thomas Road and The Nook. Trade directories from 1920 to 1940 show William Warner as the postmaster; his premises were on Leicester Road (now the site of Valley House Mews).
