New Curbside Bulky Trash Collection Beginning 2/14/2022
"We are working hard to help residents “Clear the Curb” by modernizing and streamlining our waste collection services, especially in the area of bulky trash. We heard from residents that it was taking too long for bulky trash pickups through our current appointment-based system, and we listened. That’s why I’m excited our new and improved curbside bulky trash collection program will officially begin the week of February 14, 2022. We are proud to offer an upgraded bulky trash collection service that aligns with our Beautification Initiative to combat illegally dumped items in our communities, neighborhoods, and environment. Starting next week, we will allow residents to set out TWO bulky items or TWO large trash bags with small household items per week with their regular trash for pickup from their County-provided trash hauler. We know that under our current bulky trash program, residents who called to schedule an appointment were told that the soonest pickup date was at least six to eight weeks away. Now, no appointment will be needed for most bulky items. We believe this enhanced bulky trash service will allow residents to dispose of unwanted items in a timelier manner, cut down on wait times, and eliminate the temptation to dump illegally. All bulky items placed curbside need to be too large to fit in a County-issued or regular trash cart and need to be placed NEXT to the trash cart for collection. Bulky items placed in other areas at the curb will not be collected. Acceptable items that can be left curbside include":
Doors and cabinets
Hot water heaters & push lawn mowers (remove the gas tank & drain the oil from the lawnmowers)
Mattresses & box springs (must be covered in protective plastic encasement)
Furniture such as, coffee tables, bed head/foot-boards, dressers, tables, chairs, etc.
Carpet & padding (limit 324 square feet, rolled and tied on the ends)
"Instead of two bulky items, residents can also place two large trash bags with small household items per week with their regular trash collection. Examples of smaller household items include knick-knacks, home décor, and small kitchen appliances (toaster ovens, blenders, air fryers, crock pots). Missed collections should be reported through PGC311. White good items, which include large appliances like refrigerators, freezers, stoves, washing machines, and dryers, and scrap tires will be accepted by appointment only. Residents will be able to schedule appointments for those items by contacting PGC311 or online at http://bulkytrash.princegeorgescountymd.gov/. The new curbside bulky trash program is available to over 175,000 County households that have County-provided trash collection service. Residents who reside in a municipality and do not receive bulky services from the County directly will not experience a change in services and will continue to follow their municipal guidelines. Those residents who only pay for bulky trash removal will still need to schedule bulky trash collections through PGC311. As we roll out this new and improved bulky trash program, we also want to encourage Prince Georgians to consider donating, recycling, or gifting any gently used bulky items that may benefit someone else before placing them at the curb. Whether it’s a gently used couch, table or appliance, there may be another family that could use that item and prevent it from ending up in our landfill.
